@gbhnews The fediverse is:1. Privacy-centric. An org should run its own server, thus retaining all the metrics about the users and user interactions. They can do with that as they please, some are more interested in that than others, but what it doesn't do is share those with third parties who then exploit them for their benefit.

@gbhnews 2. It's enshittification-prone. If an org runs its own fedi server, they can be reasonably sure that their followers will be fed whatever they're putting out, and not become subject to the ever-changing whims of someone else's algorithm. Running a fedi server is much like running your own website - it lets you serve the content you want to serve, in the way you want to serve it. It adds just some social tech on top which allows for user interaction.

@gbhnews 3. It's flexible. Any reasonably-sized org with one or two in-house programmers can tweak the software to suit their own needs. This is a benefit you can only get from FLOSS, the fediverse is a byproduct in that regard, but a welcome one. Especially with the fediverse, you have so many flavours to choose from - not only Mastodon - and most of these can be tweaked further to your tastes.

It might not look like it, but if you count all the ways other major platforms nickel and dime you to reach your audience, it is magnitudes cheaper to just run your own server. Sure, they (non-fedi platforms) lure you in with free accounts, but once you reach a certain size and want to continue to reach your audience, they will find ways to make you pay for that. And if they don't now, they will in the future. Tech isn't cheap. At some point, they want to see money.

@gbhnews 5. It's alive. The audience is already here. It doesn't boast the flashy gigantic numbers other platforms like to parade around, but we all collectively need to learn to take those with an entire salt mine attached to them. Non-fedi platforms have an incentive to lie about their numbers, and obfuscate the real activity going on there. I found the fediverse to be much more alive than other places I've been.
