Hmm #RiverWM has updated to using #Zig 0.11.0 but #VoidLinux doesn't seem like it's going to get the Zig update anytime soon. As much as I love Void I've hit a few barriers which to be fair are probably my own doing because sometimes I want to run the latest from git. Not sure what the answer is? Do I suck it up and try another approach or do I head back to my roots aka Arch ?

Ok so I've got Zig 0.11.0 installed by grabbing the tarball and setting my PATH to point to zig location. Then I managed to rebuild the latest version of #RiverWM which depends on Zig 0.11.0

Whilst seeing how far I can get with #FreeBSD I have been able to get #SwayWM to run without issue but other #Wayland compositors like #RiverWM and #Hyprland I just cannot get them to start. Oh well I'll leave it for today as that's enough excitement for one day. :freebsd:

#FreeBSD folks I have an issue and I think I need to either change permissions or add my user to a group ? I have installed the following #Wayland #WM Sway, River and to see if it works Hyprland. I can run Sway no problem as my user justine but both River and Hyprland refuse as my user but I am able to run them up as root which I know is very wrong. So how do I fix this as cannot see anything in the FreeBSD manual ??

@evilham Sway runs from the tty no issues.I vae XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/var/run/user/`id -u` and I've setup tmpfs for /var/run but still river or Hyprland fail . River gives "No display in the first 33" for xwayland/sockets. Also No clients on seat0 to activate

@evilham I also created /var/run/user/1001 and did the chown for the user and the chmod 0700 too as per FreeBSD docs

@evilham If I enter mount -l I see tmpfs on /tmp (tmpfs, local)but further down I also see zroot/tmp on /tmp ( zfs, local, noatime, noexec, nosuid, nfsv4acls)

I have to say that after a bit of a faff to get #Wayland window managers to run caused most probably by yours truly. I am finding #FreeBSD to be really better than expected. I can run the likes of Sway, River, Hyprland without issue and I'm really liking ZFS with encryption and OMG Geli doesn't half unlock the filesystem fast. It unlocks on this poor wee Celeron faster than my AMD Thinkpad P14s does with #VoidLinux luks and grub. Not saying I'm a convert just saying that's all. 😉 :freebsd:

OMG I stepped back before covid from speaking and being a visible role model for the #trans community to get on with mine and my families lives and also to give the younger generation a chance to step up. In the past week or do I've learned that the #terf Posie Parker has used an image I did for Dove / Getty Images in their latest hate media. It's a calendar they are selling to make money for their hate campaign defaming myself and others claiming we're all men. >>

I'm not sure whether I should or can even afford to do anything about it though. Yes it hurts immensely but also gives me a kind of well you've made it if you're on their radar. Strange I know but well. I sold the rights for those images when I took part in a Dove campaign so it's really up to to those organisations to take it further unless she had legally purchased them from Getty images then there's not a lot I feel I can do.>>
