@davidrevoy Also it seems the issue is more with the interaction between gradients and the halftone filter. I’m not really sure how it behaves but my understanding of the filter is it should map the mid tones between two values as a dithering of “pixels” or points using the two extreme values to create the effect of blending. The problem seems to be that while the “dots” are being produced the mid tones are still being used. Not sure if that makes sense…

@davidrevoy Essentially it creates the dots but (in the case of black and white being used as the extreme values), instead of having dots being either black or white, we get dots being grey! 🙃

@davidrevoy Sounds like a bug to me but I’m not sure about the logic of the filter. Maybe that is how it is supposed to work?

@davidrevoy The interesting thing is, I’m able to get full blacks if the halftone filter is applied to a non gradient base color. Say 50% gray, you can achieve the effect with the filter. But when applied to a gradient it works differently for some reason

It was a nice surprise to find out that @davidrevoy was part of the creative team that made the graphic assets for Tales of the Orient and (by Green Sauce games). I played that game some years ago and loved it (yeah I’m a casual gamer like that) Only now I realize David’s touch in the art of the game. 😅Great work. Good graphics and good game

@davidrevoy Would you consider moving back to a screenless pen tablet? 😅Until some point in history you were one of the few artists that almost convinced ne to move to a screenless pen tablet but then you went into the dark side with the XP pen artists pro 16 😆

@davidrevoy Ahh in unable to try this in a painless way as my main screen is 4K but my tablet is FHD, so is either struggling with the mapping or wasting the 4K potential@of my main screen 😰

Once again I find myself in the position of having to search for a new distro. One that will make it a priority to use XLibre when X11 is deprecated for good. Do I like the XLibre project and his maintainer. Not particularly. But I am one of the, apparently, rare cases in which Wayland is not an option. So when major distros drop support to X11 my work setting will be pretty much broken. And I’m sure as hell Debian will also drop support for it in future releases (if not 13, 14 will be)

@davidrevoy I really don’t find technical issues with what Xlibre is doing. I reviewed the changes in their latest release and tried out te code successfully with an Arch Linux install. Regarding the ethics, well I don’t agree with the Xlibre project leader in many, many things. But this is common with many other projects that both think different to what I believe both technically, ethically and politically (Debian, and Fedora project included) (1/4)

The biggest issue I have is not really Wayland. Wayland is just a protocol meaning that every desktop environment will need to implement it to have a “Wayland implementation”. As you may know this means the every implementation is desktop dependent and so every one is maintained separately. (2/4)

Gnome and Kde will be fine for sure, maybe even XFCE. But smaller window managers will suffer. I use DWM or Xmonad and I doubt they will ever be ported to Wayland. I could use Sway or Hyperland (yet another troublesome project owner it seems) but still I would not benefit from things like gsetwacom or ktabletconfig. Quite likely I may not benefit either from the Color Management implementations done by every DE, and xiccd is out of the question as it is X11 dependent. (3/4)

So I’ll have to change my workflow to adapt to either gnome or kde and I would very much like to keep my over-the-year-perfected workflow running 🥹🥹Sorry for the long reply 🙇 (4/4)

@mangeurdenuage @davidrevoy Thanks for the suggestion. I am more than willing to try a FSF endorsed distro. The main issue is my hardware. Both my wifi card and graphic card are a useless without proprietary drivers/firmware 😕😕Devuan is definitely n my radar. My concern is my dependence to systemd (lots of scripts and configs I have are systemd dependent) but this is something I can definitely work on!

@davidrevoy Well, is not so much about comfort and habits. (and please allow me to ask as I may be taking this the wrong way, but was it sarcasm?) but about being productive and using the software I consider the best for the task. (No I don’t think X11 is the best but most of the software that run only on it is)

@doctormo I’ve always thought that the model is broken in a way. Considering how many companies benefit from Open source libraries and give nothing/not enough back to the community, it makes me think that after all GPL was right in its enforcement of keeping things Free (as in freedom). At least that way companies would be “forced” to contribute if they make use of such code 🤔

An update on this:There are good news and bad news. The good news is this is not yet another Linux issue I need to spend time trying to fix. The bad news is the tablet/pencil is broken as it seems to happen on Mac OS with the proprietary drivers as well #linux #artistProblems https://mstdn.jp/@Juankprada/115569049306519810

I think it’s time to start checking my next Linux hop. There is a restriction which will really limit the options. My next Linux install must support Xorg/Xlibre (hopefully the second) Extra points if it doesn’t use systemd (but not mandatory) I’ll keep this post pinned to add updates on my findings. #xorg #xlibre #linux
