       @Hempressemilym @FranckLeroy In the UK we have a state-run health system *and* you can choose which surgery you wish to attend, if that’s so important to you (though in practice I can’t really see why it would be).

       @CliffWade I never used it to start with, as I could never really see the point - unlike Facebook. I find that all social media seems to be a predominantly negative experience though, including Mastodon, so really I need to just cut it down…

       @CliffWade I think there’s quite a lot of toxicity here, but it’s possibly a little more subtle. I’m still preferring it to other social media on the whole, though, for the most part.

       @vees @cfiesler I’d say that a key difference is that code on GitHub is (or can be) a work in progress. So suggestions for improvement are potentially helpful. Whereas an academic publication is *finished*. It went through a lengthy and often quite gruelling process of peer review and revision, and that’s all done now and it can’t be altered. So someone telling you how it could have been improved isn’t really helpful, because it can’t now be improved.
