Surprising fact: no major professional scientific organization has flipped from a paywalled publishing model to 100% Open Access. The @ACM the world's foremost professional computing organization, is going to be the first on January 1, 2026, when its entire digital library will become freely available to the public.

@jonmsterling @andrejbauer @pigworker @ACM Costs exist even if you are going to publish with arXiv. There is a legitimate question about how much publishing services we want--ACM provides more than arXiv, and also returns some to the SIGs which contributes to publication costs born by conferences (e.g. paying for HotCRP).But I think it's important that ACM has budgeted so it will not profit from the transition to OA; if net costs to the community increase, it will not be because of ACM.

@jonmsterling @andrejbauer @pigworker @ACM HotCRP costs what it does because you can't just build it once. Like any piece of software it must be constantly enhanced if it is to remain useful. You have to host it and support it. All that costs time and real money. And as a PC chair I'm happy to have the conference pay for the valuable service it provides.

We're building Noteful (noteful.net), a mobile & web app that teaches users about fundamental music skills. If you're willing to take a quick market research survey, we'd love your input as a music educator, music learner, or parent to help us do a better job! @wilbowma @mdekstrand it was explicitly designed to be revenue neutral for the ACM overall and I haven't seen any data that would seriously question that. But if you switch to OA then inevitably costs are associated with publishing instead of reading. So those who publish a lot pay more, sometimes a lot more.

@tedted @wilbowma @mdekstrand I think the costs of publication depend on what you expect your publisher to do. If your expectations are low (arXiv, LIPIcs) then it can indeed be done on the cheap. But traditional publishers do a lot more: https://medium.com/sigchi/what-benefits-do-traditional-publishers-provide-83b7bd3fcbc0

@djoerd @tedted @wilbowma @mdekstrand I'm not personally familiar with the ACL--to an outsider it looks like a professional organization much like the ACM, though more narrowly focused. Say more :)

@djoerd @tedted @wilbowma @mdekstrand Who pays, then? Conference registrants? Donors? I can assure you there is money being spent :) And I'm sorry, but I can't compare to every org under the sun. I picked LIPIcs and arXiv because they're widely used in CS and I'm familiar with them. You are more than welcome to do the comparison to ACL yourself along the 7 points my blog post outlines.

@djoerd @tedted @wilbowma @mdekstrand It sounds like it is not doing all the things that ACM Publishing does--and also of course it requires more work of the community. But if the community is happy with it, then I am happy for them! It will be interesting to see how it evolves over time.

Can we all stop evaluating research based on whether the results are "surprising" please? This is lazy reviewing. Surprising doesn't matter--novelty does. We might all think something's true, but the first work that *shows* it is true empirically makes an important contribution.

It's not just my opinion--"The results are not surprising" is listed as problematic in the ACL'23 Peer review policies, which point out that "Many findings seem obvious in retrospect, but this does not mean that the community is already aware of them and can use them as building blocks for future work." https://2023.aclweb.org/blog/review-acl23/

"Strike me down and your journey to the Dark Side will be complete." - Emperor Palpatine to Luke Skywalker Worth considering by all those wishing the bullet hadn't missed. America heals herself not by assassinating anyone who might be a proto-fascist, but by electing leaders who will strengthen democracy and the rule of law.
