@stux Coffeezilla does a good job calling investigating and reporting on crypto scams. This is a slapp suit plain and simple. So long as the crypto industry continues to allow scams and grifters in their midst they will continue their long and slow death. Instead, the crypto industry needs to focus on real world use cases that are actually useful and to go back to the libertarian and ancap roots and meaningfully challenge corporate and state power. And for God's sake, Bitcoin is not anonymous and not decentralized. Find a better coin.

@stux Remember that under Dwight Eisenhower the marginal corporate tax rate was 90%. If you wanted a tax break, you had to reinvest back in the company, pay your employees, pay your shareholders or donate to charity otherwise it went to the government at the end of the year. Maybe that was a good idea?

@eff @Thorin @nytimes Remember that the ai fad is driven by corporations chasing fake money from the fed rather than trying to compete for real customers. Most of the economy is fake because most of the money is fake. America has not been capitalist since world war two and is now in a state of managerial feudalism, where a small number of skilled and unskilled laborers actually make things with their hands and most of the profits go to the managerial class and the government.

@nanook @eff @Thorin @nytimes Do you know how modern monetary theory actually works? The actual value of money is the amount of stuff you can buy with the currency divided by the supply of currency. The fed creates income inequality because those who come into possession of new money can spend it at pre-inflation prices before it trickles into the wider economy. In my view the government should not have the power to print. Full reserve banking should be the law and goldbacks should be the national currency so that we do not have to trust the federal government to maintain the gold backing.

@stux Remember that Congress doesn't have the power to decide whether or not abortion is legal because only the state governments have the general police power. It can regulate crossing state lines for abortion or ban the sale of abortion equipment across state lines but it cannot legalize or ban it outright. When Roe v Wade was overturned all that happened was states that wanted abortion moved in the direction of abortions up until birth for any reason and the states that didn't want abortion banned it with very narrow exceptions. Congress can decide to fund abortion or not to fund abortion but that doesn't really matter because planned parenthood is independently profitable regardless of government funding. Project 2025 doesn't advocate banning abortion, only cutting government funding for abortion, because the originalist authors know that Congress has no power to ban abortion or to legalize it within state lines.

@stux The problem with digital voting is that it would make it easy to cheat in a manner that is harder with in person voting. For example, who is to say that someone is standing over your shoulder while you vote, or people using hacked credentials to vote for someone else, or party activists, controlling families or employers pressuring you to vote against your consciousness. When you register to vote you should have the ability to request an absentee ballot, but we the people have the right to free, fair, secret and secure elections. Digital voting does not achieve this and would in fact make to worse.

@rms It would be possible to increase the supply of fish by dumping large amounts of Iron powder and fine industrial sand into the ocean to provide nucleation points and nutrients for the growing of plankton and amobea, and this increase in supply will work it's way up the food chain so that there are more fish.tp feed the people. I think that there should be active research into fertilizing the ocean like we use fertilizer on plants.

@stux You know the rich have the financial mobility to pass the costs onto you and me. If you have a business, taxes are part of the production costs, and the money to pay the taxes has to come from somewhere, mainly by pushing a cheaper product or increasing the price, both of which make life worse and more expensive for people like you and me.

@stux The problem is that too much tariffs too quickly will cause economic instability. What should be done is slowly raising tariffs to the desired level over 1-2 years to give the market time to adjust. Another alternative could be so sell import licenses that can be attached to specific good at auction to let the free market decide what is worth importing and at what price.

@rms If the Chinese refugees are US citizens it violates the 14th amendment. You cannot arbitrarily deprive certain races of rights under the 14th amendment. I am not fully sure whether this applies to government employment, after all, a right to a job infringes the freedom of association of the employer, but there is a case here and the supreme Court should elaborate on this.
