Holy cow. Remember the Dakota Access Pipeline? So many lifetimes ago? Which got AOC on the path to the House? The Standing Rock tribe just won a major victory; the Army Corps of Engineers was wrong to go forward without considering their concerns, court says.https://www.commondreams.org/news/2020/03/25/huge-victory-standing-rock-sioux-tribe-federal-court-rules-dapl-permits-violated-law

"If the people gathering on capital steps with guns, protesting Covid19 lockdowns, were black, they'd be thrown in prison instantly." So noted a friend yesterday, rightly. This is how our society is white supremacist, lower-case. Not overtly speaking of white dominance, but tacitly asserting white as normal, that white Americans are "real" Americans whose self-aggrieved affectation must be given due consideration and handled carefully. They mustn't be considered an outrageously anti-government movement posing an immediate threat to our collective health, which is what they are in fact.

@salixlucida I'm reading "Bloody Lowndes" by Hasan Kwame Jeffries about SNCC organizing and the formation of an independent political party in one of the most violent Alabama counties in the '60's, and incidentally the origin of the black panther logo......and white landowners did exactly the same thing then too (evicting activists). Wow.

Amazingly, Mississippi has dropped its flag because it embeds the Confederate battle flag:https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jun/28/mississippi-lawmakers-to-remove-confederate-emblem-state-flagMississippi was vying with Massachusetts for most racist flag. See it and be amazed:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_U.S._states_and_territories#/media/File:Flag_of_Massachusetts.svgYes, it really is an arm holding a sword over a Native American. My wife went to witness testimony last fall for a bill to pull this flag. One Native woman testified that she had been testifying for 30 years straight. The committee chair--representing Plymouth--was disrespectful and condescending, the bastard.Yeah, we're so progressive...not!

@fsf One has to love a software package that's at version 27 and those are real version numbers, not some bizarre marketing gimmick. Some time around 2030 the version will coincide with the year and people will think it's from Microsoft.

@salixlucida I take the word "diabled" to come from the same root as "diablo" so this lift has become demonically possessed.

Analysis by Democracy Now's Juan Gonzalez finds that Trump share of white male voters was same as 2016, and white female's share went *up*.https://www.democracynow.org/2020/11/5/2020_election_ballots_electoral_collegeMeanwhile armies of young people, especially of POC, did enormous voter registration and outreach to win Arizona and Georgia. https://www.democracynow.org/2020/11/5/arizona_marisa_franco_mijentehttps://www.democracynow.org/2020/11/6/anoa_changa_georgia_2020_electionSo Dem establishment, while you were wasting time chasing moderate Republicans, young people of color went out and saved your a**. @Lonestar God bless the front-line health-care workers who go to work each day risking their lives trying to help people even while people like this woman disrespect them. We're all, every one of us, utterly sick of this pandemic. But this privileged white woman is choosing to be intentionally ignorant to justify doing what she wants. Infectious Covid-positive people can be asymptomatic. Nine months in, do I even need to say this? Why do we keep seeing intentional ignorance? I can only surmise it's because, since slavery and land theft, a segment of privileged white society has been using intentional ignorance continually, and this is just one more installment.Any responses that assert well-document science or history I'll ignore.

@amolith Wait, does this mean Luke Skywalker is older than Yoda? Serious continuity issues here.

@amolith @abloo @manton @jbauer I pretty much start R every working day, but I run it through Emacs (ESS). And sometimes to do a simple calculation I open an ielm Emacs buffer to use the Emacs Lisp interpreter. Because I just don't have enough parentheses in my life, I guess. How's that? :^)

@amolith All bad guys wear black or gray stocking caps, which is very handy to know because then everyone else is completely trustworthy.Apparently the bad guys work in cold conditions because they wear their hats even while sitting at their computers.

Hi @fsf, on my client there's no space between the first URL and "Get" so when I click on it my browser tries to open an incorrect link.

I've been taking another stab at learning Esperanto, after seeing a positive review of John Cresswell and John Hartley's _Esperanto_. I second that positive recommendation; this is an instructional book that is crafted with love.My copy was printed in 1978. Way, way out of print. But it's great to see books from another time, when it hadn't occurred to anyone to add distracting sidebars. Now I'm seeing better that Esperanto has word roots, and operations on them. Make adjectives into verbs, verbs into nouns, verbs into other verbs, etc. Fascinating.I can't say why I'm learning Esperanto, except that it's so cool I can't imagine not doing it.#esperanto

I've been using Emacs for years (decades?) and I've only just discovered that one can embed an ASCII art drawing in an Org file by:- creating a source code block ("<s TAB")- add "artist" as the programming language- open the block ("C-c '")You're in artist mode, drawing with the mouse as in a paint program, only ASCII rather than colors come out. Then close the block ("C-c '" again) and you have ASCII art embedded in your document.Emacs, always more surprises.Incidentally, the required packages are all distributed with base Emacs. No installation needed.#Emacs #orgmode
