@ukko @Elizafox ‘a’ is not an int, it’s a char. And the standard says it can be either signed or unsigned. sizeof(char)==1, always. sizeof(int)>=sizeof(char) , but typically at the very least sizeof(int)>=2.

@Elizafox @ukko If you ever struggle with the more obscure parts of C or C++, this is a good starting point:https://isocpp.org/faq

@ukko @Elizafox That's very interesting. I was not aware that C and C++ differ on something this fundamental. So what happens when in C you write:char c = 'a';Is this an implicit cast? If it is a truncation, will the result be implementation defined, as it may yield a different result on little- or big-endian platforms?

@samyalkenawi @zleap Here's a great book to put this into a historical but also current perspective:https://www.christophermiller.net/semiconductors-1A very interesting read.

@zleap @samyalkenawi The book partially overlaps with Queisser's book:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13747807-the-conquest-of-the-microchipQueisser was a pretty bigwig guy in German solid state physics, and his book (in the original Klingon titled "Crystal Crisis") served as a warning at the time (mid-80s) that Germany is not focusing on semiconductors enough. He held up Japan as a role model, which is ironic, because outside of DRAM, the Japanese did not succeed much in advanced integrated circuits. Smith's book covers that nicely.

Is there a way to embed #PeerTube videos seamlessly into a post?

Never mind, it does embed the video at the bottom of the post after a while.

@freemo Other than mention it it the account metadata, is there a way to link the two accounts on the Mastodon and Peertube instance? Or is this one of the things where I should move to an instance that provides both services at the same time? I kind of like #DiodeZone, though.

@colinsmatt11 @freemo I don't mind not having SSO, I do use a password manager and I will get a #YubiKey eventually, but it's more about managing identity, i.e. that all these accounts represent the same actual person. Sort of like a verified UUID that can be used to establish that link.

@itisiboller @petersuber @conservancy I, for one, teach my students about the existence of #SPDX and to actively use it in their projects. I hope that one day we’ll see regulation requiring shipped code to have an #SBOM. It’s really not much of a burden. https://spdx.dev

I passed my #Ham Technician Class license exam today.Although I didn't study for it (because the new General License Manual will be released on the 15th), they encouraged me to take the General class exam, too. Came actually close to passing, I was 2 questions short. But I do want to read the manual anyway, as to not make a fool of myself. As soon as I have my call sign, I'm looking forward to play around with the transmission mode of my HackRF One.#Ham #HamRadio #AmateurRadio

On a friend’s recommendation I got myself a Baofeng UV-5R #Ham #Radio. It’s great for the price but boy is it awkward to program manually. Will try to hook it up to Chirp tomorrow. #HamRadio

@niconiconi @ignaloidas I know that, but that wasn't @ignaloidas's "extremist" premise. If you want schematics as code, I would think a SPICE netlist or some CircuitTikZ code should suffice. With CircuitTikZ, you at least get an awesome diagram. Neither of these are design tools, indeed.

@peterdrake You are right. And yes, as counterintuitive as it is, in POSIX and may other systems, a non-zero return code indicates an error and a zero return code indicates success. That's why the traditional C hello world program ends with `return 0;`.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exit_status

@freemo @peterdrake True observation. I seem to remember a discussion way back, when people were suggesting positive exit codes for success and negative ones for failure, but that never caught on.

@Archie8 That reminds me that I do have a bicycle to fix. Will have to substitute the sandwiches with noodle casserole, though. There’s a nice Scandinavian word for it: #hygge. The German #Gemütlichkeit comes close, but is not quite the same thing. The English #cozy works. Mastodon sure is a cozy place.
