@futurebird According to her husband, the classic mystery writer Margery Allingham used to write her first drafts in longhand and *then* dictate them to a secretary, adjusting the diction on the fly to be more like speech than writing.

@futurebird YUntil just a few years ago, the New Yorker had a preliminary section “Goings On About Town “, which included very brief notices of every play being staged that week. In the early 1970s, when The Fantasticks had become the longest-running play in New York, they started substituting Joyce’s Ulysses, one sentence a week, for its notice. I happened to check the notice the day they started: my high school was putting on the show and my best friend (playing the Boy) and I (assistant stage manager) wanted to go to New York and see it. I can’t recall how long they kept it up.
