@pavot shameless self-plug: I did a YouTube series on how networking works: https://jaytuckey.name/2020/10/18/how-websites-load-a-deep-dive-into-the-ip-network-stack-and-how-it-is-used-to-connect-to-a-site/

@kev one thing people seem to miss in all these discussions is the business models that these companies are built on. Whatsapp had to go in the "collect all your data" direction because that's their business model.Telegram will eventually have to monetise their users also, as they are a business.Signal, however, is a non-profit, and so they can't be sold-off to a company, and they have no business incentive to change the game later. All they have to do is cover costs+developers.

Just found an awesome tool! https://htmx.org/It let's you add some dynamic bits to a page with simple and clear directives. Combines with a Python backend beautifully! What you return to the requests is just HTML chunks, that get swapped into your page.

@mike I've just received mine and it's awesome! Very early days software wise, but the hardware is super nice, so I'm excited to follow the development. I'm also keen to try my hand at hacking on it a bit.

@mike @8none1 I actually disagree - what they are targeting is to have a reliable system. To do this they limit it to modern versions of python, because that's what they test and develop with. They also push people strongly to us the os image. Why? Because it's going to be the best user experience for their users, easy to update, easy to use all the add-ons etc. Also, many of the low level network features, to discover IoT devices, work if you dedicate the whole pi to the platform.

@JF @PINE64 Same! Super reliable for me, although I had an issue where the alarm didn't go off a few times. However, notifications have been great, and super reliable

@martijnbraam written in the days where we trusted the people running the (much smaller number of) devices on the network. 😉

@kev I've wondered if the solution to spam is some combo of the "first email from new address needs to be accepted" idea that hey.com uses, combined with some sort of distributed reputation list, like what what CrowdSec does for IP's

I've been pondering the ethics of listening to Jupiter Broadcasting's podcasts. They are all-in on Crypto, and use crypto funding methods to support their shows. The actual shows are great and go into depth on super interesting technical topics. They support their Crypto stance by saying it's a fully open, FOSS-based network, but that just shows that you do bad things with great software.Got thoughts?
