@futurebird @baldur interesting! Was it helpful at all beyond the ego boost? (A better question is: would you recommend the process to others?) Also: if you submit your work for criticism/review does that mean you are giving ChatGPT/AI permission to use your work to train itself?

@futurebird @baldur oh, fascinating! I’d be loathe to give it anything new but if it’s something that may already have been scraped… 🤔

@futurebird @baldur I’m not sure that’s a bad thing. I do, however, worry that it will also eliminate beta readers and potentially editors (not to mention lead to everything sounding the same).

@futurebird @baldur congrats on having a great beta reader! Unfortunately, not all of us are that lucky (or write in a genre significant people in their lives are willing to read).

@aubreyjones @futurebird @baldur interesting. I’d be very hesitant to submit something new to it, but that’s my personal issue.

@futurebird @baldur I don’t think I ever thought of it that way. 🤔 Now I’m going to have to try to recruit new beta readers

@futurebird when #IAmWriting I find it helpful to tell the few folks I share my WIP what kind of feedback I’m looking for & where I am in the process. I’ll mention that I just want to know if the premise works, or the characters are interesting, or the action is believable, or whatever. I’ll also tell them explicitly, that I’m not looking for them the proofread or edit my work at this stage, nor do I want any suggestions as to where the story should go, additional details I should know/put it, or how they would change it. I remind them, often repeatedly, that it is my story & I am seeking a specific kind of feedback. When the work is finished, and ready for proofreading/editing, I have professionals do that. Only then do I turn to beta readers for their thoughts on the work as a whole.

@wjmaggos I tend to think that the many voices & perspectives available on the web inclines it more toward a community than away. The difficulty, as you point out, is that the sheer magnitude of voices makes it almost impossible to establish or maintain the kinds of behavioral standards/norms that define most offline communities. We have not, as of yet, figured out how to create & maintain an online space that does not become an echo-chamber whether for personal, political, or corporate messages. Perhaps, community is not something that can be achieved at the scale the world-wide web demands. If that is true, that also implies there is a size limit on nation-states that we are swiftly approaching. On the other hand, perhaps we’ve all been so busy yelling at each other & building walled gardens of like-minded folks, that we’ve failed to actually try creating real community online (& increasingly IRL). I think we should keep trying.
