@pluralistic The time tax is creeping into middle-class time privilege now. Phone trees have more dead ends, website authentications are more onerous (or just broken). The burden is shifted even on expensive services: banks, cell and ISPs, hotels, rentals, tax preparers, insurance, HR, and fin. advisors all want you to self-serve the bureaucratic effort. Like grocery checkout, you’re doing what used to be someone’s paying job. “First they came for social services, but I was not on food stamps.”

@futurebird This maybe sounds a little backwards: usually the election-rioting, cemetery-spectacle types are jingoists who worship the flag (while also defacing it with cop-prop color schemes). My sense is that exactly those people would love to have the excuse to persecute/prosecute protesters who burn it.

@futurebird Just speculating: maybe it was an early uncanny valley thing. There are cultures where representation of human faces in photos or drawing is still taboo.

@futurebird @rayhindle Yes! I think this is it. An appreciation for the creepy or disturbing is acquired through cultural exposure (subculture?).
