@dajbelshaw @cryptoduke @TheFuzzStone for me it's not about being careful, as much as reclaiming freedom. Financial freedom is a prerequisite of other freedoms.

@flab i was a #gnome 3 user and liked the way work spaces worked. gnome 40 was the final straw for me. i went back to #xfce.

@alex it seems like all the #pleroma instances i look at (for finding users to follow) that are using #soapbox-fe show the login page as the home page with no public timeline available. Am i missing something? Is "LoginWall mode" the default? or the only option? Thanks

@knhy i couldn't remember, so i went to take a look at the source code linked from the official site: https://git.gnu.io/gnu/gnu-social/unfortunately, this is not atypical for some gnu projects IME.

@selea @ordabchao @stoerdebegga @annasara it's a long standing *ubuntu* issue that popOS seemingly inherited due to it being an ubuntu derivative. Ubuntu has been asked to fix this for *many* years (me included), but they have said they don't want to decide which kernels to remove for people, which is absurd to me because, by and large, people who choose ubuntu, or a derivative, just want the OS to boot and to not break everything by doing something so stupid as continually installing kernels in a small partition, and are not interested in manual kernel management. Even if you wanted to support user choice in this way, i'm guessing you could simply allow people to manually lock a kernel and then skip any locked kernel on kernel cleanup. I swear i heard they were finally addressing this, but i can't find the news anywhere.

@kzimmermann i probably would have been running a server a long time ago if #dendrite were ready. The Synapse #matrix server's requirements are unacceptable to me.

@plausible please consider lower tier(s) so nano-sized agencies and individuals can afford a plan. $9 is a lot if you only have a handful of sites you want to use it with.

@selea @kzimmermann thanks, but can you quantify "running fine" and "small vps"? how much ram and cpu does it use? are large public rooms being joined? i only see "At least 1GB of free RAM if you want to join large public rooms like #matrix:matrix.org" in the docs. "at least" doesn't tell me anything all that useful, especially without any user numbers.

@selea "And within 10 minutes had three spamaccounts been registered and started to spew spam."bots. you might just implement a Human Checker on your registration page instead of blocking human gmail users.

@monsieuricon I memorized "path to file, path to symlink" for this issue. I don't know why, but that was memorable for me.

@kravietz @jakub @bookwar @Conan_Kudo Upstreams should know what lib versions they tested with. Why shouldn't there be a simple manifest for upstreams to fill out that the distros' package management software then verifies with the source and installs? (not rhetorical) This makes it easy for upstream,s to "package" for all of linux and gives distros helpful info, but still lets distros do whatever they want/need to do to install the software. In the xz case, or similar, a new dev/signing key could automatically flag a review downstream and/or probationary period.

@bookwar > I don't believe that every upstream developer must become a packaging expert.I agree. That's why many don't package for linux distros themselves, b/c rpm and deb are too much to learn, or whatever the case may be That's why the manifest would only include the most necessary info for downstreams to have, and info upstreams should know. Maybe that's not possible, IDK. @kravietz @Conan_Kudo @jakub
