@cunny @alyssawitchcraft @tubularnebula I’m a teacher. I’m familiar with the concept of “unschooling” and I believe personally it’s a bunch of privileged nonsense only concerned with protecting the feelings of those whose children *won’t* ever have to have a job, or pursue further education.

@tubularnebula @cunny @alyssawitchcraft I’ve read free to learn, and I enjoy Gray’s writing and his methods of explanation. I still feel there absolutely is a massive barrier that prevents most working class families from unschooling, and that overall it’s only beneficial for those with the privileges to choose their future careers at their own pace - I also have thoughts on the way it encourages a lack of structure within other aspects of the child’s life, but that goes hand in hand with my criticisms of unparenting

@alyssawitchcraft @tubularnebula @cunny I understand that, but my point is that things aren’t structured that way, and it still stands to reason that abolishing schooling would do more harm than good, by letting parents and caregivers have complete control over a child’s education

Yeah so anyway to continue my point - a lot of school abolition rhetoric is rooted in classism. Many children require the mass resources that public schools have in order to reach even a standard level of qualification, and all non-mandatory schooling would do is to make schooling inaccessible for those who would need to find jobs in order to survive, or who aren’t in a situation where schooling would benefit them immediately. Education is a basic human right, and to automatically assume that a) children don’t want to be educated and have better opportunities for themselves b) every child has the option of homeschooling or non traditional education, and each child would have the resources to provide a level of education beneficial to them c) parents and caregivers would not take advantage of non mandatory schooling in order to force their children into work or other things beneficial to themselves first and foremost it just honestly shows that some of you really haven’t thought this through past some sort of youth liberationist fantasy, and nobody’s stopped to consider the practical aspects of schooling, or the actual, you know RIGHTS and BENEFITS given to disadvantaged children through public schooling being mandatory and readily available

There’s currently major rail and nhs strikes in the uk, alongside ambulance strikes scheduled for tomorrow. The rail strikes I understand, alongside the nursing strikes - but as a physically disabled person the ambulance strikes are unacceptable. We’ve been warned to not go outside tomorrow, in case we hurt ourselves??? What the actual fuck???

@alyssawitchcraft absurdly irresponsible is the exact phrase I’d use. I can only imagine what would happen if me or one of my friends needed emergency healthcare tomorrow. I also have several close friends with ill family members, and for whom this could be fatal assuming they aren’t able to get an ambulance in time. It’s fucking ridiculous. Ambulances are primary healthcare responders, and considering the average wait time is already anywhere between 1-4 hours this has been and will continue to murder disabled people and those in crisis.
