@mk @WHRC Ever since I was peak-transed by the response to J.K. Rowling two months ago, I’ve been pondering the best way for me to get involved in the fight to maintain sex-based rights for women and girls. As a registered Democrat and consistent voter in the U.S. I am considering joining the @WHRC efforts.I’m interested in reading other’s experiences with this group in particular, and with activism about gender identity in general.

@grimauld @Lilitu @Eurowoman24 @Ismat @gold_bee The Feminist Current podcast with Kathleen Stock and Natasha Chart from Feb 2019 goes into some of the ways the UK and the US differ. Natasha pointed out how dispersed those of us who are gender critical in the US are. This matters for having people turn out for an event or organizing a conference. Much of the US lacks train service too so it is much harder for ordinary women from around the country to meet up.From what I’ve gathered, the proposed changes to the GRA drove some of the UK organizing. We haven’t had something comparable. On a national level, our two-party system works very differently from a parliamentary form of government. I think we have fewer processes where regular citizens can have an impact. Here many decisions are at the state level, so there are 50 legislatures to watch.Culturally, a big difference is the degree of religiosity. Lots more Americans attend church regularly, and even many who don’t define themselves as believers. And this doesn’t neatly split the way you might think. I have one family member whose acceptance of transgenderism is rooted in the socially progressive church she is part of, and other family members who likely reject transgender beliefs because they are practicing Catholics. So oftentimes, it’s not whether someone is religious or not, but which branch of which religion. Here in the US we seem to have far less awareness, let alone activism, around this overall. I would like that to change. We have lots to learn from our sisters in the UK!

@Spaghetti_Tree @grace_hawthorn @Nora @tervacious @Trashdove @Chronic-Yonic ,I would like to abandon poorly made clothes but as a short woman with a small frame men’s sizes don’t fit me. I’m not shaped like a boy either. If anyone knows where to get well-made clothes in the small end of “petite” sizes, I would love to know.Happily, the dress I bought to wear to my daughter’s wedding has pockets, as does her wedding gown. This was a selling point for both of us. Have to chop off a yard of fabric off mine though.

@Gelatinousrube @classybitch A mother of six I know pushes back against the idea that her family is harder on the environment. One example she gave is she uses the same bathwater for three of the little ones. Clothes and belongings are handed down not only among the siblings, but through their community. Their house for eight people is smaller than plenty that house half as many. Whether for a sense of stewardship or from financial necessity large families tend to be frugal. There are valid concerns about large families but I think she makes a fair point about their use of resources. Some women do seem to thrive having more than three children. Having a higher income and supportive people helps of course!Agree entirely that it is awful for women to not be able to choose how many children to have, If any, and when, and under what circumstances. Societal pressure and religious beliefs play a big part even when contraception is available. (Natural family planning is much improved from decades ago.) It is equally true for women who may have only one or two children if not freely chosen. Expectations of motherhood have lessened but still exist for many.

@LGBALLIANCEUSA @feministstruggle With all due respect, I cannot support these amendments. We should not enshrine “transgender” in law and thereby give legitimacy to the claim of such an identity. However much you explain and define that is what this wording does. Moreover, the use of “gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender” suggests “transgender” is on par with sexual orientation. It is not.Again, however much you explain over 23 pages, that is the message I believe would be received by lawmakers and their staffs, reporters, and the public. In due course, the courts would interpret the legislative intent as recognizing transgender as a valid sexual orientation. No!The misnamed Equality Act needs to be firmly rejected. This attempt to “be nice” and seem reasonable will backfire. In my view, any potential benefits are vastly outweighed by potential harms.

@shrikefliesfree @Wildebeest You both make good points. Many people do want to believe someone smart is in charge, yet there is much evidence of stupidity. Here is an example of a smarter approach. H-E-B is a supermarket chain in Texas with a full-time director of emergency preparedness. They were already paying attention to the corona virus by the second week in January. https://www.texasmonthly.com/food/heb-prepared-coronavirus-pandemic

@Lilitu @Linnas @juliexblack This is a concern I see a lot. And while I share it to some extent I think it is a mistake to write off so many potential allies. Conservatives can mean a lot of different people. Are some homophobic misogynists? Yes, but so are plenty on the other side. There are plenty of people who lean conservative in some ways who in fact love and support their LGB children and others. And people who are LGB hold varying views, including some conservative ones. I don't want to be bullied against working with others opposed to protecting girls' sports, for example, even if we don't agree on everything else, just because how that may be misrepresented. We should push back against false narratives no matter who they come from.

@starsstorm @Cousin_Isobel @MountainSlideMama We definitely need to keep our skepticism but let's not be guilty of lumping everyone together. Republicans and/or conservatives are not a monolith. Neither are religious people. We can ally as women. The Fairness for All Act was also introduced in 2019. Per article in the Baptist Press, a Southern Baptist group, The Alliance Defending Freedom, the Family Research Council, and Ryan Anderson of the Heritage Foundation all opposed this legislation.Baptist press.com/resource-library/news/fairness-for-all-act-draws-opposition-from-both-sides/

@Cousin_Isobel @MountainSlideMama @starsstorm The media are horrible on reporting about all things trans. NPR framed opposition to the Equality Act as only being about religious exemption. Didn't mention @WomensLibFront , @WHRC_USA , @WomenPicketDC

@Cousin_Isobel @MountainSlideMama @WHRC_USA @WomenPicketDC @WomensLibFront @starsstorm I have lost so much respect for much of the media, along with organizations I used to support. It is worthwhile to seek out other resources. Brandon Showalter at the Christian Post does good work. So does Madeleine Kearns at the National Review. Also go directly to groups' own websites to see what they are saying. For instance, I just read heritageaction.com/toolkit/equality-act Their talking points and call notes include lots more than religious issues.
