The REASON I hate never ending stories and soaps, is they make me feel manipulated.I'm left hanging by all the unresolved plot points, so again and again, even if I am tired and want to sleep, I find myself clicking "Next Episode" like Pavlov's fucking dog.I don't want to be Pavlov's dog.I want the satisfaction of watching a complete story arch, and the freedom to return when I am in the mood for more without worrying I forgot some key detail in the meantime.[old man yes at cloud.gif]

@cwebber Wow, I disagree so much! <3Like, sure, of course we should have a).But that doesn't mean we can't have b) too, and I would like to gently reject the framing of "father knows best" - how is respecting your users time and making things convenient a bad thing? We are all different, with different priorities and different amounts of time to invest in learning tech. And that is fine!

@dick_turpin Honestly, that's a perfectly reasonable mistake. It says right on the box that it's a range extender! Not a repeater (even though that is what it is). It should extend the range. If people aren't fully embedded in how things work (and I'm assuming they are hiring you for that so they don't have to be experts themselves) - it's perfectly sane to assume that an extender is a device with a more powerful antenna or something like that.

Personal growth: I am getting better at taking criticism and advice.I still hate it, but I am also getting better at pretending not to!

It's good to be home. It's good to have some alone time. It's good to go to my favorite café, my favorite burger dive. It's good to go #swimming in my favorite pool.In spite of a belly full of burger and beer, I managed to swim 1km this evening at my target speed, did some poolside exercises and the hot and cold routine as well. Now hacking a bit before I decide whether to go out and look for beer or go to bed like a responsible old fart.Life is good.

OK, so it only took a few years, but I think I have figured out why my picky eater kid sometimes gags on her food!*drum roll*The gag reflex!*sad trombone*I think the issue is that because she is afraid of new foods, sometimes she very timidly, slowly, almost sorta swallows... and well, the obvious thing happens.Gagging is awful, so she became afraid of food and timid and... ladies and gentlemen, we had a cycle on our hands. We discussed it. I think we can break the cycle!#parenting

@simon You are aware that ChatGPT just makes plausible sounding shit up, right? When it gets things right, it is a happy accident. Why are you trying to optimize how well you absorb made up nonsense?

Renting out an apartment (or room) is such a great way to expose a big pile of personal biases and prejudices.I look at the applicants and I immediately have an opinion. Even if I actually know literally nothing about them as individuals and humans.Turns out I am slightly prejudiced against men and foreigners. But also prejudiced against my fellow Icelanders. I'm also ageist. Do I actually like people at all!? Oh my, oh my.Now, how hard should I fight my prejudice? A bit, right? But (...)

It's maddening how much advice given to parents throughout the years has not just been a bit lame, it's been actively harmful.Example: Food allergies. For years, parents have been warned not to feed babies peanuts and such things until they were 3 years old. And only milk/formula until 6 months old. When they finally get around to doing randomized trials, it turns out the best way to PREVENT food allergies is to feed babies exciting things at 4 months.4 months!Maddening. #dadtoot

Dear lazyweb!Does anyone here have enough #kubernetes experience to try and convince me I should use it for managing a fleet of services which are NOT web services?(My gut feeling is k8s is not designed for this so I'd struggle, but I don't know enough to know what I don't know.)

The #CloudFlare outage follows a pattern we have seen before. Was it Google last time?1. Generate an exciting config file2. Auto-deploy the file everywhere3. Everything everywhere crashesAll these big systems want to be able to react quickly to certain types of events, so they probably all have this failure mode baked in. Because security! Or some such."Obviously" the files deployed this way "should" be validated carefully. And there "should" be canaries and staged roll-outs... Should.

There's a fun "#devops is hard" lesson here (#CloudFlare).1. Because Security, you want to be able to deploy global changes very quickly2. Because Reliability, you want staged roll-outs that pause or even auto-revert if key metrics get worseYou can't have both 1 and 2 at the same time. And the temptation to go fast sometimes WILL prove irresistible. So if you're looking for ways to globally cripple a big cloud, this is the pattern to look for: what is too urgent for staged roll-outs?

I decided to ask Google Gemini about my own work.It gave correct answers! It knows about both Mailpile and Pagekite, but also moggie and the RPC kittens. I asked it to write some sample kitten code, and it did a fine job. This is pretty wild to me considering that project still has just about zero users. It looks like I could ask Gemini to write docs for me and it would only need minor edits...Gemini also told me to finish moggie already and give pagekite more love.Impressive. :-P
