Don't buy the NIV. Don't buy the ESV. Or the RSV, NAB, or even RSV-CE. Buy the KJV or the D-R, Bible translations that respect your intelligence as a person and don't use fallacies like "oldest and most reliable" in their footnotes to make you care about the spook known as the Alexandrian TT.

@kala_ Porn ruins people's minds, they can't understand simple concepts like essential properties or formal participation, resorting to "strictly legal arguments" and other amoral silliness. Of course, if people don't believe that loli is about depicting children, they should be able to answer the simple question of what distinguishes it from other genres. Pornography entraps many people including many who somehow get duped into thinking it's good/healthy/natural/whatever. But anyone who tries to advocate for it or push it on others should be torn limb-from-limb.

@Neidhardt @normandy For me, there was always an apprehension about switching to GNU/Linux where I was thinking "this seems okay, but I know I'll miss something two months in and want to go back to Windows." But looking back after more than a year of Linux only, having any contact with Windows is painful. And telemetry is only part of the problem for me, Windows now always feels like it's limiting me as a user.

@Neidhardt @normandy So really the best option is take the plunge and force yourself to get off if you are seriously committed to trying it.

@grips Tolstoy is liberal garbage (just look at the consequences of his "classic" essay on art) and also probably gives people demonic attacks from reading his works

It's interesting that the Tokugawa Shogunate was one of the most militantly Buddhist countries (that's not a complement, by the way) but still managed to be so influenced by Neoconfucianism (albeit in a unique way), possibly even moreso than China itself. It absolutely did not pan out in reality but people forget that nominally Japan was a Neoconfucian state with full religious toleration. A major contradiction and paradox.

@grips Everyone tells you "just pick up a book and read" or "read banned books!" but that doesn't mean you can read Michael Hoffman, or Dr. Stephen Meyer, or other such works.

"Parapsychology" has nothing to do with Christianity. At most, the so-called "ESP" or "PK" people claim to have is demonic, and at least, these people are just frauds and fakes. The chips probably fall into either of those categories. That's why I was depressed to see that many educated Christians believe in parapsych., probably as some kind of refutation to materialism (which I don't think it is.)But just as important, so-called parapsychological research is just an abuse of statistics, a field that is literally a spook. Conducting a parapsychological study is just equivalent to betting in a casino, rather than conducting actual research, with "scientists" betting that the subjects' "powers" will, by chance, fall within statistical norms while the subject in question bets against them.

@cidoku IDK what difference there is between running Debian's kernel with no binary blobs and linux-libre kernel (maybe more is removed but I doubt it), but I've never had a problem with that other than networking cards which are usually trash anyway.

@cidoku >I know that Nouveau will eventually support my graphics cardMaybe, but I've just stuck to AMD.>Since you use a kernel with no binary blobs, do you not worry about CPU microcode? No. I never found it helps more than the BIOS updates anyway. Truth be told I don't like 1st gen Ryzen, mine has some sort of CPU defect or other micro-issue thingy that causes it to spontaneously freeze, and no matter how many times AMD dropped an "update" that "fixes" the issue, it never stopped freezing. Though this just "happens" to not occur on Windows.

I hate to make a post about American politics. Really, it’s not my cup of tea. But I’ve been bothered by recent events way more than usual. Left-leaning history texts are nothing new. I have heard plenty of cases where A People’s History of the United States was used as an AP US History textbook. As anyone familiar with book knows, academic reception of that book was mostly negative, but I think that even its worst detractors (myself included in that) would admit that it was still part of some academic paradigm, engaging with sources critically, trying to be an actual, legitimate historical text. So even though teaching students from Zinn is probably a really bad idea, it’s still a history textbook. And I don’t think that the current “baseline” textbooks fare any better than his.The “1619 Project” is different. It is not a legitimate work of historical scholarship at all—it’s not that the Project just makes arguments that turn out to be wrong, or other incidental things—the text is fundamentally a historical fabrication. Not a history text. The leading scholars of the American Revolution, including Dr. Gordon S. Wood and Dr. Richard Carwardine, have stated the mag is nothing more than poppycock. It was not composed by anyone with a meaningful knowledge of history and people who have obviously not engaged with either primary or secondary sources to the necessary degree. Anyone with even a basic, 100-level understanding of American history should be able to call into question many of the “arguments” put forward in the Project. Teaching is something vitally important and I am in school to become a history teacher. But this “history” cannot possibly be taught to students.
