@stux This is the most insane real thing I have seen in a long time.

#Linux #Server #Sysadmin #Ops musings:I run a *bunch* of #Debian #VirtualMachines in my colo. Since many of those #VM systems don't have direct WAN access (and to more efficiently use bandwidth), I run apt-cacher-ng proxy. The local OS's sources.list has the FQDN of the local apt-cacher for the OS; this means that only the apt-cacher reaches out to a public mirror for updates. And it looks like #GATech Debian mirror is down.So everything breaks! lol, perhaps I need to get with @kwf 😂

The stats? Sure, 21GB isn't a ton of data to start, but a 75% reduction in bandwidth consumption is pretty fantastic. Not to mention pulling an already-cached update (like when doing bulk updates across multiple systems) transfer at wire speed and network isolation is seamless.

@jerry @dinosm @ruud I am reading all of this and I can't help but wonder if dedicated colo space is gonna be cheaper in the long run vs renting elastic compute.I am no where close to your scale, but I have 5 physical hosts & a few SANs in a colo and it's so nice to pay once for hardware. I have room in my cabinet :)

@jerry @dinosm @ruud Yea the ability to expand that quick is fantastic and it would certainly be neat to be able to dynamically add compute resources (to sidekiq, for example) as load fluctuates. But then you enter the dimensioning-rate-of-return land.I had a vendor charge us for 2 years of an EC2 instance. The physical server would have cost 2.5 months of the EC2 cost. And I have saved so much $ and headache vs trying to worry about cloud per-hour costs. And I like dealing with hardware. 🤷😂

@jerry @dinosm @ruud As a side bar, I would love to see your Mastodon topology/setup/config. There is a ton of posts on people's setups but so much of it misses (what I see as) basic steps.Like how did you set up your Sidekiq servers? Do you have everything installed and just the web & streaming services disabled?

@stux pinging @jeff, perhaps you might have some good ideas for a use for the 'mastodon.press' domain!I mean, I would love to host it but I don't think I would do it justice...

@bigzaphod The Windows expectation is that you don't need to do the 'safe eject'. Windows doesn't use write caching for "hot-removable storage", so when an app saves a file, Windows won't report back that the write operation is complete until the actual bits are written (vs your internal storage where some configs will allow Windows to give the app the write confirmation when the write has been cached and not yet written to disk). But there is also an Eject option on the right-click menu.

@realcaseyrollins @bigzaphod Yea mg screenshot is from Win11; I wasn't sure but I thought that Win10 had it as well.I also didn't have a Win10 VM available at the moment to check 😅
