Wife has just finished knitting me a jumper (after two false starts)I did praise but I'm sorry - looking at it think the sleeves look shortish and I doubt I could get three fingers through the sleeve let alone my fist and wrist. Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey (a thousand blessings be upon her) played a pivotal role by demanding rigorous safety data for thalidomide, which was being promoted as a safe sedative and treatment for morning sickness. Despite *intense pressure from the manufacturer,* Richardson-Merrell, and the lack of conclusive clinical evidence, Kelsey rejected the application. Her concerns were heightened by emerging reports of peripheral neuritis (nerve damage) in adults and her instinct that a drug with no known lethal dose could not be truly safe. When reports of severe birth defects linked to thalidomide emerged from Europe in late 1961, Kelsey’s earlier skepticism was proven correct. Her steadfast refusal to approve the drug prevented its mass distribution in the U.S. at the time, averting a national crisis. Although over 2.5 million tablets were distributed to physicians under an "investigational" program—leading to at least 17 confirmed cases of thalidomide-related birth defects—the scale of the disaster was drastically reduced. This woman should have a statue - or at least be featured on some currency note.How far the FDA have fallen, eh?
