       @stux They will be smart about it, won't just slap tariffs on evetything. They also won't make deals with Trump, they know he obviously can't be trusted. They will make deals with each other. So while the US gradually fades into irrelevance the rest of the world will advance. Maybe its time anyway.

       @Nonilex Not a dime. UC should be looking to do more combined foreign, private and state investment for the research being done anyway. Since the US doesn’t want it might as well sell it to someone who does. Frankly a billion dollars of state taxpayers money invested in research where the state of CA keeps the patents and benefits directly sounds fine.

       @Nonilex Without over-site business’s will simply cut corners on products. Packaging less into larger boxes and reducing quality while charging the same or more. Industry consolidation and proto-monopolies have already made most of them immune to consumer preferences. Eliminate overseas competition and we are in uncharted territory.

They were at first understandably cautious about socializing outside their economic class because they are constantly bombarded by people who want something from them. (1/2)

       @futurebird In the past when I brought vistors for fun I would ask someone on the street what time it was just to hear them say ‘get a watch’. I suppose that’s not mean, just good advice.

       @futurebird @alexwild And sure it's an island but even with global warming it will never be like Majorca. It will still be dark half the year and always cold.  Could be like the party car in ‘Snow Piercer' but look how that turned out when the servants got tired of it.
