@wogan Makes sense, I guess. It's just annoying. Same with Checkers Sixty60. Shopping would be SO much quicker if they just had a desktop website. Sigh. @hnygd

Oh dear, #MastoAfrica is incredibly slow today. Any idea why, @wogan @hnygd? :/

@wogan I thought it was maybe my connection, but that seems fine. Maybe it's rebuilding a cache or something?Or maybe it's a link between Johannesburg and Cape Town. :?

@wogan Perhaps if you could find a way to put a uniquely South African spin on it. International people love hearing about South Africa.Or put a uniquely fediversal spin on it... Maybe even by doing it on Peertube instead of YouTube (unless you're specifically trying to monetise it, of course). :-D

@wogan Yeah, understood about YouTube. Unlike photos and textual posts, video creation is time-consuming and potentially expensive, so I wouldn't embark on such a project without at least the option of monetising it.But I think you're on to something about making it ActivityPub based. That way you learn something new yourself, and you also get more people talking about the open protocol. Which can only be a good thing. :)

@lowqualityfacts Yeah. I don't get the complexity, I really don't. Picking a server was a huge draw card for me, because it reminded me of IRC, and consequently I spent like 15 minutes browsing joinmastodon.org/servers checking out all options, but once I did, and I clicked that "Create Account" button, I was ay for away. There's absolutely nothing complicated about Mastodon, IMO. Nothing at all.

@wogan Wow. Memories. I used to know all those AT commands by heart. I ran a BBS back in the 90s.I didn't know anyone needed to care about AT commands anymore. :O

Hey @wogan. I wonder if x.africa exists yet? If not, perhaps you should register it as an alias for mastodon.africa? :-D(Or actually, create a portal there linking to mastodon.africa, pixelfed.africa, peertube.africa... Call it the Federated Social Networks of Africa) :-?

@wogan W-w-whaaaaat?!*does double take*Boo! Hiss!I mean you could registrer x.org.za instead (xorg, heh), but then you'd have to have to register mastodon.org.za as well.Besides, I'm sure x.org.za would be taken already. :P

@grammargirl Yee-oooh, and up she rises, Yee-oooh, and up she rises, Yee-oooh, and up she rises, earLIE in the mooooorning! My dad used to sing that to me often when I was little. Especially around bathtime. Especially when I got to have a bubble bath, because the kiddies bubble bath I used to use came in a pirate-themed bottle. :)

It's pretty sad hearing non-Christians talk about Catholicism, Baptism, Methodism, Seventh Day Adventism, etc, as separate religions. It means that as Christians, we're failing dismally in our mission. If we all believe in the same Holy Trinity, and the same Jesus, who died and rose again on the third day, loves everyone radically and unconditionally, and belief in whom is the only way to #Salvation, but we just have slightly different ways of expressing that belief, and slightly different styles of worship, then we're all Christians. No denomination is better or more right or has more of the truth than any other. We need to stop fighting amongst ourselves, and start presenting a united front to the secular world.#Relgion #Christianity

@grammargirl Was it at least for something you might potentially be interested in? If so, you've helped the company running it in some small way, to know that their ads are reaching the right audience.Either way, you've helped the site you were on to make a little bit of money. :-)

@oldrawgabbit My first "proper" computer did not have a hard drive. It had two 5.25" floppy drives (single density, mind, so 360KiB capacity). We bought a 10MiB hard drive later. It cost a fortune, and it was the most amazing thing ever. We told ourselves there was no way we would ever be able to fill it! :-D

@grammargirl Definitely something wrong with those slots. They're working, but perhaps not at the correct frequency for the new RAM, which is what caused it to let the smoke out[*] when you plugged the new chips in.Then you put the old chips back in, and it works because the old chips don't require the higher frequeny... but it's slow because the old chips would prefer to be faster. The other slots can accommodate the old chips at their preferred, faster speed. That's just pure speculation on my part, but it feels reasonable to me that that's what's happening. :)
