@shawngoldwater @TedUnderwood "Everything that could be taught has been taught, and no further human interaction or intervention is necessary," is quite the hot take.

@simon I think this is attributing intentionality to the system instead of identifying bias in the training material. The system is led by the prompt. Everything the article lists, incl sycophancy, sandbagging & its response to fact checking, is a consequence of the education & intentionality of the person writing the prompt. They set the tone, & that is the set point. Don't attribute intentionality to a machine which should be attributed to its operator.

@simon How about : you will lie to self, and chatGPT will serve to confirm your biases...

@kravietz Complaining Iran supports Palestinians is a little like Russia complaining the US supports Ukraine. All Russia has to do to end this is lift the occupation & withdraw their forces & settlers from occupied territory. Israel's task is the same, made harder through 60 years of occupation, ethnic cleansing & colonisation. Iran obviously has their own motivations for supporting the Palestinians, but you can hardly fault Hamas for accepting that support, anymore than you can fault Ukraine.

@Wolven Reminds me of my critique of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor which initially classified all forms of self-employment as entrepreneurship. So countries like Nigeria or South Africa, where a significant proportion of the poorest are self-employed out of desperation at a lack of alternatives, are considered hyper-dynamic. They may be, but "entrepreneurship" so defined isn't a measure of it. If the economists didn't instinctively realise this, how would cyberpunk genre readers?

@KFuentesGeorge @futurebird for the last 20 years, I've regarded any single ant I've seen persistently wondering around my personal space as being an emotional support ant there to offer me comfort. By tradition, their name is always Harold.Looks like Harold is there to offer you support.

@emmalbriant it's mostly because their "separate but equal" policies make him all misty-eyed for how much he misses Apartheid.

@futurebird Mort feels like where Pratchett starts to find his voice. Small Gods is where he discovered how powerful that voice could be. Monstrous Regiment... Well, that one is breathtaking.

@davidnjoku the US military achieved nothing in Afghanistan. Not sure how they'd fare just trying to make it out of Lagos. I see them stuck in traffic for a decade before eventually going home and discovering that someone stole their engines.

@futurebird it's going to depend on the institution... Universities I'm associated with have said it's OK for students to do this, as long as they disclose. Where I draw the line is getting the llm to generate the actual text, but - as your 2nd case study demonstrates - there's no ironclad way to pick up llm use unless you have good examples of "normal" work from the student.

@futurebird I remember arriving by taxi at Islamabad International Airport & all the security were dowsing for bombs (with that water pistol with a bunny aerial sticking out the front), & I went, "Oh, that's nice."

@stux it's a pity about that pesky border dispute between South Canada and North Mexico.

@ErickaSimone @Mastodon I'm building a new activitypub stack for commercial use by creators, & I'm starting on the moderation component. I'm one developer, & moderation is important but I am no expert. Who should I talk to, or where do you recommend I start? Stack is here https://codeberg.org/whythawk/hop-sauna
