Finally, our team had a wonderful time at #SXSW on Sunday and Monday, where Flipboard and @surf hosted the first #FediverseHouse. Our CEO @mike and the whole team are 100% #TeamFediverse, and were thrilled to meet and talk to so many other open social web advocates. Here’s a feature by @Markoff for @newyorktimes, where Mike, @Gargron and @reckless1280 discuss the rise of decentralized social media, and how it can help publishers and media companies survive and thrive. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/06/technology/mike-mccue-surf-browser-decentralized-internet.html#Fediverse #ActivityPub #OpenSocialWeb #Media #Journalism #Publishing #Newstodon #NewstodonFriday #FollowFriday

As we all know, President Donald Trump’s on/off tariffs will lead to a manufacturing boom in the U.S., with legions of former USAID workers happily screwing tiny components into dirt-cheap smart phones. Or… will it? @404mediaco’s @jasonkoebler talked to Todd Weaver, founder of Purism, creator of the “made in the USA” Liberty Phone. “The phone that you were able to manufacture in the United States is not as fast as the latest iPhone. Can the newest best chips and components be manufactured in the U.S., and what would it take to do it here?” asks Koebler. “The short answer is yes ... because you didn't ask me the timing,” replies Weaver.https://www.404media.co/how-a-2-000-made-in-the-usa-liberty-phone-phone-is-manufactured/#Technology #Tech #iPhone #Manufacturing #Newstodon #NewstodonFriday #FollowFriday

Reality TV show “The First 48,” which focuses on the first 48 hours after a homicide, has had 24 seasons over the past 16 years. @ProPublica’s Jessica Lussenhop has written two stories about how the show works and why some police departments have stopped collaborating with it, including a detailed account of how it contributed to Edgar Barrientos-Quintana being jailed at 25 for a murder he didn’t commit.https://www.propublica.org/article/first-48-reality-tv-police-dallas-memphis-mobilehttps://www.propublica.org/article/first-48-reality-tv-police-minneapolis-wrongful-conviction-barrientos-quintana#USPoliceForce #Television #TV #TheFirst48 #Entertainment #LawEnforcement #USNews #Newstodon #NewstodonFriday #FollowFriday

Paul Revere is mostly known for his midnight ride — his horseback journey in 1775 to warn Massachusetts militiamen that the British were coming. @gbhnews contends that the activist and artisan’s real legacy is in his political cartoons, in particular, “The Bloody Massacre,” a 1770 work that showed a group of colonists being fired upon by red-coated soldiers. “He really played a hand in … shaping public understanding of events,” says Boston Public Library curator Jay Moschella.https://www.wgbh.org/news/local/2025-04-10/were-paul-reveres-political-cartoons-more-influential-than-his-midnight-ride#PaulRevere #Boston #Massachusetts #History @histodons #Art #PoliticalCartoons #Newstodon #NewstodonFriday #FollowFriday

Amanda Johnston is Texas’ first Black woman poet laureate. She spoke to @TexasObserver about how she’s using her platform to build something bigger — a project called Praisesongs for the People. This involves her recruiting poets from throughout the state to write poems for unsung Texas heroes. Sebastian Páramo wrote about his mother, a school lunch lady, who, he wrote, “taught me to season myself.” Mag Gabbert wrote about the oncologist treating her mother for cancer who, in Johnston’s words, “is carrying hope into each of these families' lives.” https://www.texasobserver.org/texas-first-black-woman-poet-laureate-praise/#Literature #Poetry #Books #Culture @bookstodon #AmandaJohnston @blackmastodon #USA #Texas #Newstodon #NewstodonFriday #FollowFriday

The Starlink service has been critical for the Ukrainian military, but owner Elon Musk is far from a reliable partner. @timkmak’s Counteroffensive looks at the search for alternatives. There are currently four in the frame: Luxembourg's SES, Spain's Hisdesat, Britain's Viasat, and France's Eutelsat/OneWeb. “We can successfully defend the country without Starlink. We did it at the very beginning of the full-scale invasion, and we can do it now. It is more difficult, more expensive… but it is possible,” says Volodymyr Stepanets, who works with a group that deals with the repair and procurement of Starlink terminals.https://www.counteroffensive.news/p/can-ukrainian-soldiers-survive-without#Tech #Technology #ElonMusk #Starlink #Ukraine #UkraineRussia #Newstodon #NewstodonFriday #FollowFriday

“Ever notice how Russia’s always the bad guy?” Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted back in March, claiming that Hollywood is responsible for the world’s negative perception of the former USSR. @damemagazine’s Zeb Larson says actually Marj, it’s a bit more complicated than that. He takes us from the 19th century through WWII and the Cold War to today to explain America and Russia’s constantly evolving relationship. https://www.damemagazine.com/2025/04/08/hasnt-russia-always-been-our-worst-enemy/#History @histodons #Russia #USA #MarjorieTaylorGreene #Newstodon #NewstodonFriday #FollowFriday

Postal services in some areas of the USA are unreliable, so it makes sense to have a grace period when it comes to returning election ballots — at least, that’s been the case for a number of years in around half of the states across the political spectrum. @bolts reports on how that’s changing. “This past March alone brought news that two states … will repeal their grace periods; that conservative federal judges are on the brink of killing grace periods in two other states; and that Trump, who for years has falsely alleged rampant mail-voting fraud, wants to pressure the rest of the nation to reject every mail ballot that arrives after polls close,” writes Alex Burness. https://boltsmag.org/restrictions-on-grace-periods-for-mail-ballots/#USPolitics #Voting #VoterSuppression #ELections #USElections #Newstodon #NewstodonFriday #FollowFriday

@thecontinent has a guest post this week from the Harare Review of Books. Here’s a review of Freda Epum’s memoir, “The Gloomy Girl Variety Show,” a book about the Nigerian-American writer and artists’s search for belonging in Tucson, Arizona. “Epum may call herself a gloomy girl, but she is cool to hang out with in these pages. Her memoir is lively, sometimes sad, and always vulnerable. And she is upbeat, if somewhat wry. It’s a raw, beautiful and deep work,” the review concludes. https://continent.substack.com/p/review-gloom-to-manoeuvre#Nigeria #Tucson #Arizona #Books #Bookstodon @bookstodon #Memoirs #Newstodon #NewstodonFriday #FollowFriday

One of the biggest challenges facing news media and journalism: People simply do not want to pay for it (or they cannot). According to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in March, 83% of Americans say they have not paid for news in the past year. Their reasons vary but the most common is that they can find plenty of other articles for free. The group most likely to pay: highly educated adults, Democrats, and older Americans. Here's all the data. We want to know: Do you pay for news? You can choose more than one answer in this poll.https://flip.it/DXzaXa#News #Media #Journalism #MediaIndustry #Paywalls

@vfrmedia Yes, it's complicated! There've always been ads in newspapers/magazines in conjunction with paid subscriptions — it dates back to the 1700s; we learned that this was because media simply couldn't be profitable based on subscriptions alone (at least that was the case when we first started in journalism and no doubt it's even worse now). That said, the online experience with ads on free sites is really painful — not the case with paid subscriptions though, for the most part.
