@BestGirlGrace The lyrics are strange, yet speak for their times. What really gets me is that he not only sings objectifyingly about this woman but also about the disposability of men. That you have to be a rich guy buying pearls. Yet there is a change of mind and culture already taking place: there is hope that it's just not the pearls that win this girls love but his good heart. Unthinkable!

Just saw a toot about lesbians being all perfect and each deserving a girlfriend. If you think you are perfect because of your sexual orientation there's something off. But then thinking that you have to "deserve" love is just as strange. I mean it's nothing that you get for Christmas because you were a good child...
