Hey academics with ADHD, how are you coping? Are any of you thriving? Can’t say I am. Working on better systems and likely more ADHD coaching.#ADHD #ADHDacademic #AcademicAbleism #neurodivergent @academicchatter

@academicchatter @theADHDAcademic Thanks. Hasn’t been easy to find one. Seems to be a lot of demand. I’m on a wait list to start in June.

@mneme @thesiswhisperer This was the case for me. I only disclosed my ADHD to my workplace this year, 6 years after my PhD. The fear of stigma is real and exhausting! I also didn’t realise I could ask for help until recently - there are legal obligations to provide accommodations. Still trying to figure out how to thrive in this work environment though. Yet to be convinced that it’s possible and hoping I’m proven wrong. I’m really happy to see research is being planned in this area.

@thesiswhisperer @mneme The lack of research may be related to a lack of focus on adult ADHD in general. The focus until more recently has been on children/adolescents and there's still a lot of belief in myths about ADHD not existing in adults.

@thesiswhisperer @mneme You may be interested in this review on adults with ADHD and comorbidity with mental health conditions just published. It's concerning. We really need to change our education/workplace systems to account for neurodiversity! https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0149763423001781

Academics with ADHD, how are you managing the expectation that you can perform like neurotypical academics? I’m finding it particularly challenging for people without ADHD to understand how complex the impacts are and how overwhelming it can be. Especially when you’ve been masking for years and aren’t able (or willing) to do that anymore. Perimenopause has worsened my ADHD too, so I’m at increased risk of burnout now. Fun times!Interested in people’s experiences 🙏🌻#ADHD #AcademicChatter

@StephZihms That sounds great. Glad to hear you got that support. It would be fantastic if you could share resources. Work are covering my ADHD coaching. I working on how to work with my ADHD better too. I haven’t covered how to engage with my team about it yet.
