@jon @rburchell I’ve come to the conclusion that although I appreciate FOSS, it’s not a panacea. Bootstrapped small developers like #Vivaldi, #Obsidian, and #iA who keep some code closed to prevent having their work used to compete against them without compensation seem much more resistant to #enshittification than VC-funded shops that wave open-source as a banner, because eventually the latter have to serve the VCs’ interests before their own vision and the interests of their users.

@jon @rburchell Also, here are some of my thoughts on software licensing: https://discuss.logseq.com/t/on-the-agpl-license-and-the-idea-to-move-away-from-it/14716/20

@spinningthoughts @anders @TfTHacker I’ve experienced editing transclusions in place in Logseq, and it’s great. Transclusions are visually differentiated from the local text, and just because you *can* edit them in place doesn’t mean you *have* to.I don’t want or need *anything* to be harder or more time-consuming to edit in #Obsidian just to force me to think twice about whether or not I want to do so.

Jason Cross makes the same point on #Macworld that I did last week re. #Apple selling Macs with 8GB RAM, and ends with:> This is pure corporate greed from the world’s biggest and richest technology company, and as Apple customers, we shouldn’t stand for it.But…what is he—and what are we—going to do about it? Stop buying Macs and switch to Linux or Windows? (Unlikely.) Refuse to buy a #Mac with 8GB by paying more for 16+? (That’ll really stick it to Apple!) Or…what?https://www.macworld.com/article/2130071/entry-level-m3-macbook-pro-8gb-memory-ram-performance.html

In the same article, Jason figures that Apple is paying $30 or less for every 8GB of RAM they charge you $200 for.

@clive > Moving to the internal circuitry, the genuine AirPods are a marvel of miniaturization and precision engineering. They use a combination of rigid and flexible printed circuit boards to pack components densely and ensure that every millimeter of space is used effectively.Reminds me of the story about Steve Jobs dropping a prototype iPod or early iPhone in the fish tank in his office, and saying that the bubbles coming up proved the engineers could squeeze it into a more compact form.

@nicole @ia @apolaine @reichenstein I have Obsidian set up to look very similar to iA Writer (including the font), but in Obsidian I’m able to change the few things that I dislike about iA Writer. iA’s very limited customization is great until you’re annoyed by one of the choices they’ve made for you.

@nicole @ia @apolaine @reichenstein I don’t mind seeing markdown codes full time as long as they’re ghosted back, but I find the way the asterisks around bold and italic selections scream at you in iA Writer viscerally annoying and conceptually misguided. iA treats codes as if they were punctuation, but unlike punctuation they’re not part of the text itself, so they should be visually distinguished from it.It’s too bad, because if it weren’t for that I’d use iA Writer a lot more.1/2

@nicole @ia @apolaine @reichenstein I use the Minimal Theme with the Minimal Theme Settings and Style Settings plugins. In Obsidian I avoid the markdown rendering issue by mostly using live preview; I know markdown well enough that I don’t need to see the codes all the time.I *love* iA Writer Quattro—as far as I’m concerned it’s the greatest writing font of all time. Their three fonts are all open source and downloadable from GitHub.2/2

Just a reminder in all the holiday bustle, you can lock in 5x as much storage for the same yearly price if you subscribe to #Obsidian Sync before January 1. (Current Sync users get the upgrade automatically.) https://obsidian.md/blog/new-sync-plans/FYI, I don’t work for Obsidian. I’m just a satisfied user.@obsidianmd #ObsidianMD

@dhry I’m going to add that the newer the processor you get now (M3 instead of M2, etc.), the longer it’s typically going to get upgrades to the latest version of MacOS, followed by a couple of years of security updates. So paying more for a newer processor is likely (but not guaranteed) to give you a Mac that will last you longer.I returned a 2016 MBP when Apple released the 2017 within the return window, and got an extra year of updates out of it.5/5

@dhry 2gb used to be enough, and then 4 was enough…until they weren’t. Even if 8 is (barely) enough *now*, and even if your workload doesn’t change, new versions of the OS and apps will continue to need more and more RAM, as they always have. (Iirc 8gb Macs won’t be able to run the new AI features coming soon in a Sequoia update) 2/

This sort of user-hostile, #privacy-destroying #enshittification is the reason why #Microsoft is the most hated, least trusted #bigtech company after #Meta https://arstechnica.com/security/2025/04/microsoft-is-putting-privacy-endangering-recall-back-into-windows-11/#Windows

@mpmilestogo @chris As I mentioned in my separate column, I start a new journal file every year, which feels like having one big file without getting unwieldy.

I hate how unreliable the universal clipboard is on #macos and #ios. For a feature that #Apple promotes as one of the benefits and conveniences of using its devices and operating systems, this “unpredictably works for a while then doesn’t work for a while until it does again” behavior is unacceptable.

I found the command below on Reddit and it appears to be helping (seems to work better with a cut than a copy). But you know that stereotype that Linux is too hard to use because you have to go looking for terminal commands on forums? defaults write ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.coreservices.useractivityd.plist ClipboardSharingEnabled 1

I was fine with that when I used Linux as my main OS, but no one ever promised that “it just works” because the OS and hardware were so tightly integrated.
