"We've rebranded to Meta so our employees don't have to admit they work at Facebook" only really works if you don't then heavily advertise your rebrand

"The oversight of privacy not being built into our laws was engendered by a weak-kneed sympathy for those who loved information, and by the feeling that the internet was so vast and full of data, and processing so slow and memory so limited, that no person, no matter how they tried, could more than mildly inconvenience anyone."God Bless You, Mr Zuckerberg, pp 7.

Something I wish I'd been told early into counselling* If you feel like not going to counselling, tell your counsellorThat's a normal feeling, and it's better to explore it than not

Okay so did you know that (some) students since 2017 are reporting that they cannot work effectively with folder structures? They don't use them, considering any attempt at it a hot mess.Everything goes into the bucket of the file system, and if search doesn't find it, it's gone. Was listening to Convivial Society talk about it, and it just feels like such a weird thing - could we really be on the cusp of a different way of thinking about how files are stored?

I'm constantly seeing companies create a useful tracking metric, and then optimise to it. The moment you optimise to it, you are tracking something else entirely. If you're tracking code coverage - the amount of code present in any test case - you have a rough idea of how thorough your testing is. When you optimise to >80% code coverage you're measuring how few tests are required to get 80% coverage

Some beliefs demand they will be right eventually - they say that if you maintain this belief - eventually the world will right itself. This can be in the face of the your world becoming worse the longer you hold it!The beliefs don't explain why the world will eventually become better, but they promise it.

If I have a trans child, and I refuse to support them, the child will grow to resent me.I might believe that eventually I'll be shown to be right, the child will love me, they'll see I only acted in their best interests. The beliefs don't explain this moment, they just promise it. The only way to continue is to invest more heavily in those ideas, let that day come quicker.

I'm beginning a fervent believer that any set of beliefs that promises a day of justice or judgement or vindication - without explaining how you'll get there - should be cast out immediately. There's definitely tough things in life! Studying for exams has a day of vindication. But there's a direct line between studying, good results, and vindicating that work. These beliefs don't have that. They have faith.

What they all have in common is a continuous feeling of internal discomfort for those beliefs alongside a social demand to double down on them. You feel that what you are doing is *wrong*, and can only push forward by increasing your belief. Studying for exams does not (typically) produce internal distress, a belief that you are doing something wrong. Pushing your child away does. Every time. You have to justify that, to minimise that feeling

What gives me hope here is that this represents a way out for those TERFs. Positive examples in media of trans children and their parents would be an escape hatch. An example that they can keep their relationship with their child, this isn't the end! Representations in real life, too. Just eventually they'll see the examples that they can still have the relationships they wanted, they don't need the GC views.

What's weird about this though, is that a lot of this theory comes from books about cults. GC belief doesn't fall under the classic definition of a cult. There isn't a single leader or set of leaders. There isn't a continuous campaign of removing each person from their support networks. I don't know what the name is for groups like fruit-grower-website, {number}chan, MGTOW etc. They have a multitude of people taking advantage, but no single leader

What I'm really describing here are groups that directly encourage members to distance themselves from their support networks. This used to be a whole *thing* in Christianity, "Go preach to your friends/neighbours in extreme ways. They rejected you? Well, we accept you". Caelan Conrad has a series where they pretends to be a mother of a trans kid, and see the content in these 'support' groups. The content is designed to make you *hate* trans people, despite ostensibly being there for support

Look at {}farms falling apart right now in K*ffals Twitter stream. It's all "I really hope I don't lose my 'friends' here". "You all accept me". We can do a whole routine about how fun that is, and fuck them, they're bad people. They are bad people. They express hateful views and do hateful actions. They directly do damage to others, and they enjoy it. And also, the groups are only there because we respond like that.

If any of us screenshot all their posts, show their hypocrisy, they are pushed futher into their groups. Rejection from friends? Their group picks up the slack, justifies their need for the group.Show their work what bigots they are? Tell their mother and friends what they said online? The groups are self-maintaining and recruiting. The response of hate is part of the maintenance.

I'm old enough on the internet to remember how this went. Initially there was a belief that we should reply to what was said. Be intelligent, and in the 'marketplace of ideas', we'll win out. Some people just haven't heard this before! Some will ignore you, but you'll get through eventually. Then we had a backlash - '"I shouldn't have to teach you, you go do the work. Emotional labour is important"We're still in the backlash.
