I took about 100 photos while hillwalking in #Scotland over the last 2 weeks. This view down from the slopes of Beinn a’ Bheithir (aka Schoolhouse ridge) to Glencoe is one of my favourites.

I love the fact that the main impact Musk has on my life is to remind me to donate to organisations I care about like Wikipedia and NPR

Do I know anyone here who is willing to share their experience deploying an institutional Mastodon server? A contact of mine is looking for someone to discuss the experience as he works on getting a government agency to deploy their own instance. Boosts appreciated #fediverse #mastodon

@grammargirl I am starting to think that my final newsletter of 2023 was tapped in to the Zeitgeist

I wanted a nice graph to show just how decentralized the Fediverse is, so I built this one from latest data at instances.social. It's actually a lot more decentralized than last time I looked (in 2022); the top 30 instances now house 85% of the users. In 2022 it was about 95% of users on the top 5 instances. #fediverse #data

I've been using em dashes since I picked up the LaTeX manual in 1986 and I'm not going back just because some text extruding software uses them more than most humans. Also, my grandfather was a printer and I knew from an early age that "em" and "en" were legit scrabble words.#OldManYellsAtCloud

This week I have (a) enabled DNS security extensions (first documented in 1997 in RFC 2065) on a domain I control and (b) enabled IPv6 (first documented in 1995 in RFC 1883) on my home router, so I think it's time to break out "The Dream of the '90s" from Portlandia: https://youtu.be/TZt-pOc3moc

Here is a handy visualisation of the decentralization of the Fediverse from @ricci (who did a better job of cleaning his data than I did in the toot above) https://arewedecentralizedyet.online

When I gave the keynote at SIGCOMM earlier this year it was recorded and I finally got around to posting it on Peertube: https://peertube.roundpond.net/w/no4sPs4xUxgGwMQvwMJrimTalk abstract:The bridge is one of the most common metaphors used in networking, which is why you see it on the cover of so many networking books, including several of mine. It represents the architectural element that connects things together. In my career, I have also acted as the "bridge" between communities (industry and academia, for example) and worked to forge connections between different technology areas—both multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) and software-defined networking (SDN) followed this pattern. I will discuss some of the major technological developments that I have been involved in and the factors that, in my view, enabled these technologies to have an impact. An important factor is the ability to communicate ideas to a range of different target audiences. My focus on communication also led to my early decision to write textbooks, and I will discuss the evolution of the Systems Approach series as we have sought to increase our impact on our readers.
