In Australia, the LNP has announced they are doing away with 41,000 public service jobs. The LNP will still expect the work of the Public Service to continue but will apply staffing caps for ‘permanent’ Public Servants (that are reported). Departments will be able to hire temporary employees as much as they can afford and they will not be counted. That means more contractors and more consultants will do the work. And when they leave, all the knowledge leaves with them. The firms that supply the contractors and consultants then make financial contributions to the LNP. They have done it before. In effect, the LNP is diverting tax payer funds to contractor and consultant firms and receive some of that amount back as political donations. Now I am not calling that corruption - it would be up to the independent National Anti- Corruption Commission (assuming it is not scrapped by an incoming LNP government) to make such a determination. It is not like it has not happened before with the Howard, Abbott, Turnbull and Morrison governments. The ‘Pub Test’ is: If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then what is it?#auspol

After an interminably long (and mostly uninspiring) Australian Federal Election campaign, tomorrow (Saturday) is the big day. While about half the electorate has already voted (early voting started right after Easter), the rest of us vote tomorrow. What I am looking forward to is … a #DemocracySausage#auspol#auspol2025#auspol25#AusPolitics

I see the #Crumbmaiden has defeated #SideshowBob for the #Liberal leadership. I wonder how long that lasts before the constant undermining and backstabbing leads to a #Libspill. The conservatives have form when a centrist leader tries to plot a middle/right road - cf Turnbull circa 2015-2018.#auspol#auspol2025#auspol25#AusPolitics

News that the #USA is undertaking a review of #AUKUS has drawn out former Prime Minister Paul #Keating to say what we all know:‘The Albanese government had the chance to undertake a review in its own terms when first elected to office in May 2022, but denied itself the opportunity for fear of being seen as dodgy on the alliance. Now President Trump’s Pentagon, as it is entitled to do, is subjecting the deal to the kind of scrutiny that should have been applied to AUKUS in the first instance. The review makes clear that America keeps its national interests uppermost. But the concomitant question is: why has Australia failed to do the same?In any case, the calling of the Pentagon review should be the catalyst for the government to get on with the job of forging a relevant, distinctly Australian path for the country’s national security, rather than being dragged along on the coat tails of a fading Atlantic empire.’We all knew we would never see those #submarines and we should never have betrayed the #French#Auspol

#Starlink is deliberately de-orbiting older satellites to ‘burn up’ in the pristine upper atmosphere.‘Burn up’ actually means ‘leave a bunch of metal vapour in the upper atmosphere’.—————quoteBefore the first Starlink launches began in 2019, only about 40 to 50 satellites re-entered per year. SpaceX just brought down ten years' worth in only six months, adding an estimated 15,000 kilograms of aluminum oxide to the upper atmosphere.—————Scientists are only just studying what this may do to the atmosphere (and life on earth). Early indications are not good.People should be *really* worried about this and keep an eye out for future updates. Especially given the #USA seems to be turning into a lawless joke.Cc @sundogplanets#Satellite #Pollution #Musk https://spaceweather.com/archive.php?view=1&day=05&month=08&year=2025

So now the indicted war criminal Benjamin #Netanyahu has ‘doubled down’ on his ‘attack’ against #Australian Prime Minister Anthony #Albanese, claiming again that he is ‘weak’.Well the best way of showing Netanyahu his place would be to signal in no uncertain terms what Australia actually thinks of the #Genocide that Netanyahu is perpetrating in #Gaza by:* withdrawing the entire Australian embassy from #Israel;* giving the Israeli ambassador and the entire embassy staff 12 hours notice to leave the country (which is three times longer than the #IDF give #Palestinians to get out of the way of the missiles);* imposing a #Russia level sanctions against Israel;* immediately banning all trade (including parts for the F35) with Israel;* immediately freezing then seizing all Israeli assets in Australia and put them aside to immediately help provide aid to the people of Palestine and then help fund the reconstruction of #Palestine;* demolish the Israeli embassy and build a Peace Park dedicated to the memory of the Palestinians who died during the #Genocide in its place;* closing the border to all Israelis; and* advising the Israeli Government that when they have withdrawn their illegal settlements from Palestinian lands, rebuilt Palestine and stopped all restrictions on Palestinian people then the Australian Government will consider an application to establish a new embassy … perhaps in a tent in a camping ground somewhere …And if necessary, pass legislation in the Parliament clearly stating that Israel is not eligible for any form of compensation for any of these actions.Australia may not be a key player in the Middle East, however, if Australia acts in such a way, the world would be suddenly shocked into similar actions, in line with their International Criminal Court obligations. It would also ‘suddenly’ make clear to the leadership in Israel that there are real world consequences for committing a Genocide.#auspol #Worldpol #BDS

@amd The following applies in general rather than specifically to the three cities mentioned.1. Coffee is the religion of the nation. Australians would, as a general rule, NEVER go to Starbucks as they sell something resembling mud. Each time you go into a cafe, try something different off the menu until you decide what you like most and then order that in different places.2. At some point, you will decide to have ‘fish and chips’ at a beach. Fish and chip shops are everywhere and will ask if you want salt or chicken salt on your chips. ALWAYS ask for Chicken Salt. You can thank me later.3. Australia does not have bottomless drinks (ie, you can’t get unlimited refills).4. No one in Australia drinks Fosters - it is slop we send overseas.5. All taxes are included in the advertised price.6. You do not have to tip in Australia as we have reasonably decent wages here and people do not expect a tip. If the price is $X on the menu (for example) then that is the actual price. 7. Follow the late Anthony Bourdain dictate of eating where the locals eat - that will generally be at cafes etc rather than chain stores.8. Multiculturalism is everywhere and we do not have to be ‘from that culture’ to make/serve it. Apparently Americans seem to think that, for example, only people of Mexican descent can make Mexican food. That is not the case in Australia as we have Multiculturalism. Enjoy all the different styles of food from around the world.9. Say Bun. Now say Bn (without the u). Say it a few times. Now say Brisbn and Melbn. You now speak a bit of Australian. Vowels are really important as you can’t spell words properly without them. That does not mean that we actually pronounce them. Never say BrisBANE or MelBORNE, ALWAYS SAY Brisbn and Melbn.10. If a word has two or more syllables, Australians will usually shorten the word and add a ‘y’ at the end. So breaky (breakfast), Brisy (Brisbane) Rocky (Rockhampton) etc. But NEVER make the mistake of saying Melby … no one ever shortens Melbourne (Melbn - see above) and if you do then it is highly likely that the person you are speaking to will immediately call Border Force and have you held in immigration detention and then deported.11. Locals will seldom correct you if you say something the wrong way (eg, saying all the vowels - see above). Listen to how people say things or refer to things and try to copy these things in the future.12. Vegimite - it is everywhere and you should try it … BUT don’t spread it as thick as peanut butter. Spread it really, really thin - no thinner than you are currently imagining. Just try it on some toast - maybe at a hotel where you get an all you can eat breakfast so you can have something else if you don’t like it. We eat it from early childhood, so we are used to it and that is why we really like it.Good luck and have fun.

Fun fact, the planet #Earth is not where it was a year ago, when 2025 started.Yes, the Earth orbits our local star. However, our local star orbits the #MilkyWay and has moved about 6.3 billion kilometres around the Milky Way since 2025 started. As our star moved about 6.3 billion kilometres, so did the Earth.Oh, and of course, the Milky Way is also moved about 20.2 billion kilometres since 2025 started. Now someone with real mathematical skills will draw vectors and can precisely tell you how far the Earth moved in the last year, but it is going to be *around* 26-27 billion kilometres since 2025 started. As you are on the Earth (or, very unlikely, you are orbiting the Earth) you have also travelled about 26-27 billion kilometres since 2025 started.Remember, as Douglas Adam’s observed: Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is.#Astrodon #Space
