@futurebird I just read an article with a paragraph-long caption on an image. It repeated the same info in the body text. And then it put the same text in a sidebar. The reason I read the whole article is because I was trying to make sense of the technospeak making up that caption.

@futurebird Now if only I can figure out what struck so many readers here where I live so negatively about the story. I found the Culture and the kinds of problems it worried about fascinating and encouraging while they found the same story to be a huge dystopia.Anyway, from here: huge thumbs-up. Definitely recommend - and look at what bothers you, if it does!

@futurebird I am just guessing, but I would think the first requirement is the idea that a symbol might represent a thing. That leads to many kinds of hieroglyphic or pictographic systems, followed by phonetic languages over the last few thousand years. All that said, don't several kinds of animal have writing systems? Scent marking, pheromone trails, even simple heaps of refuse to say "Mine!" - they may not have the nuance of human language, but they communicate.

@foone SSC's cargo capacity is a bit low. But it does cut the travel time!

@stux I used to recommend to people in other countries that they should visit the US and see how hugely wide the variety of people and communities is, here. Now, I would not recommend it for anybody. The current political leadership seems geared towards lining the pockets of a few dozen people at most, and tearing down every semblance of 'for the people, by the people' that still exists. While not without flaws before, it was still my home and foundation - and they want to tear that up.

@futurebird Why not get a more direct reading with dowsing rods? Haruspexy (with a trained anatomist) is guaranteed to work. ;)

@futurebird I've been getting it from Costco, which is closer to $3.50/box. That doesn't help if you don't have a Costco nearby. However, their prices *have* been inching upwards, too.

@futurebird @kajord @Outsider-Z I loved that movie as well. I dont' think it changed any of my thoughts about QM anywhere, but it was fantastic for connecting some really disparate ideas.

@Nonilex We really should. Ask Californians about gas prices, for an older example!

@grickle My cat already likes to sleep on my books. That would be a suit I can't travel in for fear of waking him!Ignore the fact the train is long enough to circle the house!

@Nonilex Well, if xAI is writing code for SpaceX, then everybody else has a chance to surpass them!

@futurebird How fast can they boil the oceans? But maybe it can handle a billion-instance MMO with ChatGPT running every NPC?

@Nonilex Sadly, Russia appears to be more reliable than the US. I would think their antipathy towards religious practice might make them a bad choice for India, but you never know. India's nowhere near being able to stop using fossil fuels.

@futurebird I'm pretty sure most cats choose to sit on things that have greatest contrast with the color of their fur. Our friends' white cat typically chooses the person in black slacks or skirt to sit on.

@futurebird I've had this TV for years. And have probably watched less than an hour this year.

@futurebird I have friends who would pay to float in one of these once every few months. They kept the door open, being claustrophobic, but apparently got a lot out of it even so.

@futurebird I've seen people doing it, and claiming good results. Not since 2002, however (when I left to work in another country).

@futurebird @incomprehensibeel I am also on team anti-Haley, I fear. Her first words to me in the game are an insult about my clothes. I may admire what she's doing with her photography, but she never apologizes.
