The book starts off with Mosca defining what the mafia is:"Since the first step is to eliminate this vagueness in our spoken language, we must recognize that Sicilians use the word “mafia” to refer to two distinct occurrences or social phenomena. Although these phenomena are strongly related, they can be analysed separately. The mafia, or rather the spirit of mafia, is a mindset that—similar to haughtiness, pride, and overbearingness—within a certain social order, necessitates adopting a particular line of conduct. In Sicily, the term does not refer to a specific fellowship but to a vast complex of many small associations, each with its own goals and aspirations. These goals and aspirations are such that they invariably bring the members of these associations perilously close to violating the penal code and can sometimes involve truly criminal behaviour."What caught my attention was how he described the mafia as "Two distinct occurrences or social phenomena" and as a "Vast complex of many small associations". This gives me the impression of the mafia in Sicily as being very decentralized and mainly tied to local operations instead of the usual "Sophisticated" centralized crime networks. The Sicilian concept of the mafia also seems to have a certain standard which the members must uphold as Mosca then brings the "Spirit of mafia" and describes it as "A particular line of conduct". Lastly he mentions how each of these associations all have different goals which can lead to chaos for the authorities if not handled swiftly.

Instead of telling falsehoods, they frequently claim that they do not know or do not remember the truth, which they actually know and remember very well."Disputes in the Middle Ages were of a much smaller scale compared to the era that preceded it and also to the era that succeeded it. The difference between the Ancient times and Modern is in terms of state capacity. It's interesting to note that the Italian government is that time had failed to control the mafia until Mussolini showed up.Note: Hallerian private war is basically private individuals settling their own issues without getting others involved. The only rightful third party actor is the King who is the enforcer of Gods Will and has every right to intervene if the individuals involved break Divine Law.
