@aral The only thing I disagree with in this is all the breathless hyperventilating about ‘how fast’ Trump has been able to tear down democratic institutions. “Only one year!”It only seems that way to the poor misguided Americans who thought they lived in an exemplary and stable democracy, the ones who bought the propaganda that declared American democracy was the best in the world, instead of being a teetering castle made of sand ready to collapse in a strong wind.

@futurebird It was an error in air traffic control, which makes it a result of a different kind of terrorism: the systematic starving or dismantling of all kinds of important systems that people rely of for safety. We’ve been hearing how dire the situation is in air travel after a decade of backsliding, so after the incredibly destabilizing last year on top of that, the news is sad but hardly surprising. The terrorists are in Washington.

A magpie story: two years ago in June, a wind storm blew a fledgling magpie out of the nest at the top of the neighbour’s towering blue spruce. Most of its siblings were able to flutter to a new roost, but this runt was left behind in our yard with an injured leg and not yet able to fly. It was a perilous week that included hazing from unrelated adult magpies, hiding from the other neighbour’s cat, the local coyotes, and crows.1/ #Birds #burd #Magpie #yeg

@futurebird But going out on a limb, you can generally reduce the likelihood a nation will want to lob one at you by, say, not attacking them.

@futurebird Even if that was the real reason (which it isn’t): there’s been an embargo for half a century, surely if it was going to work it would have worked long ago?

@futurebird I don’t think it’s possible to weed out profit seekers by offering money (they *are* paid enough, there are just many others who are paid too much)You’re right that being a representative to the people is a sacred trust of its own kind, and commodifying the sacred is always corrupt. It’s a perennial problem that I don’t think has a permanent solution, only constant reinvention and recommitment to the goal.1/

@futurebird I was explaining to some friends/family recently that Zapatistas choose community representatives by lot, which caused lots of consternation - how do you ensure you will have honest, competent and capable people? My counter is: how do we expect that having an exclusive, money and status driven popularity contest will select honest, competent and capable people?2/

@futurebird Like you, I am cautiously optimistic for your city with its new mayor- I think there is the potential for much good to come of his term. And I agree with you: keeping him off a pedestal is the best way to make sure he never falls off it.3/f

@futurebird Clear and astute observations. 👆“I don't think this revulsion is just natural, it's a high effort system done intentionally to keep women in our place.” It keeps men “in their place” too as you point out.The high effort system has a name: patriarchy, and it’s a natural bedfellow to supremacy.

@futurebird If you create a perfect simulation of a cat, you have created a cat. However, I don’t believe that is possible, not do I think it will ever be possible… I think physics imposes hard limits on our ability to fully know enough to do that. If on the other hand, you have created a cat-like software object, you have created something possibly interesting and unique, but not a cat.imho

@futurebird Yeah the dissonance of guilting ordinary people while the private jet thing exists is huge. It’s like guilting people who cram themselves into a bus for an intercity trip instead of paying attention to the rest of the highway crowded with private luxury vehicles.

@futurebird Now all I see in my mind’s eye is a 30ft woodpecker on the side of an apartment building, searching for the treats inside. If I don’t sleep tonight, I’m writing nasty messages to you! 😉
