@pepperraccoon @hilarymcam I ended up looking for (and finding!) the 'block' button here after seeing an infamous Twitter troll pop up today. He can troll as much as the admins let him - but I won't be reading it.

@hilarymcam @pepperraccoon I can't figure out Mastodon's DMs, sorry. But he is (or was) here under his own name and it's memorable enough that I recognised it immediately after two years away from Twitter.

A couple of bits of background info from a previous life doing civil defence exercises. Again, no hashtags so as not to clutter important messages.* Flood water is toilet water. Don't let kids play in it.* If you're high and dry but your water is out - most households have >100 litres of clean water in the hot water cylinder. Turn it off at the wall (even if power is off - so it doesn't blow the element if the power goes back on) and it's drinkable.

And if your power is out and you've got a portable jump-starter in the garage - check to see what accessories it has. I just checked mine and it's got 12V ("cigarette lighter" to us oldies) and USB outlets as well as the traditional jumper cables.(And I've just put mine on to re-charge... reminding myself that I won't have time to charge it up AFTER the power goes off if there's an event down here...)

Back to the subject of water in cylinders.... As long as it's been up to 55 degrees or more within the last few days, legionella shouldn't be an issue. If water is off for longer than that then that's a whole new set of issues to work through.

@fmacskasy For a while I'd have described a vote for NAT/ACT as a bet that there wouldn't be any disasters of any sort for the next three years. But this was before Rimmer brought up Guy Fawkes. Now it's obvious that the only reason for wanting to do so would be if you actually want to see the entire country burn.

@billbennett @puck I read the first book about 40 years ago. I didn't strike me as being a particularly filmable story as it was, so I would expect it to have been changed around a lot to make a decent TV show of it.When someone buys TV rights they basically buy rights to use the title and character names and plagiarise the story. _Any_ faithfulness even to the spirit (let alone the letter) of the original is just an added bonus.

@CarolynStirling @Br3nda This is assuming the voters won't punish NACT-PF for being unable to work together - especially since Chippy has been doing a much better job than Clucky at being inclusive. The concept of a grand coalition has its place - but fairly much as a nuclear deterrent to use if ACT (or a hypothetical reincarnated SUP on the opposite side) make demands so extreme that no legitimate party would accede to them.

@smitty @ra I think there would be less confusion about Mastodon if more people remembered Usenet.(and wouldn't it be good if there was a Mastodon client that could handle multiple Mastodon server logins as easily as a Usenet client could handle multiple newsgroups...)

@strypey Probably lack of demand. There's probably about ten times as many people east of the main divide (Blenheim, Christchurch, Dunedin. etc.) as there are west of the main divide (Nelson, Greymouth, Hokitika, etc.)

Land Information NZ hosted a couple of webinars this week and showed us the new functionality in their basemap service at https://basemaps.linz.govt.nz. Thanks to much of the country now having LIDAR data (and a bit of fudging in the gaps with 20 metre contours) they've now got a smart new 3D terrain map.The problem is, sometimes the LIDAR has been processed to show the underlying ground level, not the above-ground structures...

@h4890 @Dizzfunctional @ChrisMayLA6 Of all the criticisms that could be levelled at the USSR, high taxation is not one of them. Until 1989, at the height of perestroika, the USSR had a flat income tax of 13%. https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1989/04/17/soviets-face-progressive-income-tax/019f809b-9702-4f00-ae62-b3127d565d78/

@h4890 @Dizzfunctional @ChrisMayLA6 So, you're talking about an ideological hypothetical tax rate, not an actual tax rate. Fine, then. You do you.

@strypey It looks like the wheels are beginning to fall off this story. “His nose hit my palm"? What was her palm doing in his face in the first place?

in other news, I see there are reports about more attempts to get fusion energy actually working.I wonder what they would do if they found out that fusion energy was already being produced - practically inexhaustibly, and so much of it that the vast majority of it goes to waste - and no more than about eight light-minutes away from any potential users...
