@jerry @kurtseifried honestly, I'd rather be on the fragment of the fediverse that allows big corporate players to join in than the one that will 'cancel me for not canceling someone else'.Blocking a site because they won't block another seems antithetical to how this is all supposed to work, and I'm more worried about idealistic authoritarian admins than I am about how much Meta could learn from me via ActivityPub.

@mttaggart I've long wondered if eBPF had potential to replace a lot of driver and subsystem code. I know that's not the current intent, but it seems like it might offer a path towards microkernel-like flexibility (but not microkernel-like security or separation).Heck, I wonder if it could even be an 'egg' for actual microkernel stuff. Like, if you can program a driver in it, and you have known interfaces, couldn't those interfaces be brokered out of the kernel and to a 'server' that handled them in userspace?I'm not at all an expert in such things, but I think eBPF is potentially the good kind of slippery slope; the kind where Mesa might ship eBPF components that encroach on or replace kernel-side components and decouple a whole lot of things.

@mttaggart I noped-out of that in freshman year of college when my folks were like, "uhh, turns out college is expensive. Instead of paying for it, we think you should get a loan! Don't worry, it'll be fine."I said that it wasn't fine. Dropped out and focused on work experience instead. Bought a little 'starter house' on an FHA loan (which promptly lost half its value for a decade, locking me here), and had a kid two miles away from grandparents and friends who could help with child care.Gotta say... it's not all good. I think I made good choices; I'll own a home and retire... but when I see a homeless person on the street, it's often someone I went to school with. I missed out on a lot of the college and Big City experiences my friends had.

@mttaggart Wouldn't 'growing fields of grass and then chopping it down and deep-sixing bales of it in the ocean' work much better?!

@mttaggart I asked a grad student at our local college bar about this when he told me he was working on carbon capture technology. He immediately developed a thousand-yard stare and ordered shots.

@geerlingguy I'm still a bit disgruntled that PowerPC and OpenFirmware on CHRP didn't take off.If Apple pulled something Rhapsody-like out earlier and Microsoft had kept a PPC release into Windows 2000, I think maybe we would have seen enough inertia to have PPC chips get the investment and development they deserved. We'd be in a different world today, I think.

@glennf Would it be cheaper to get it from Russia/Belarus... if the Canadian stuff costs 25% more than today?Because that's happening in half an hour. 😟

I got really tired towards the end of the day on Friday and decide to take a rare nap right after work. I dreamed I was INSIDE the SIEM interface, pulling on data flows to push values into fields.I think I need a vacation.

@davidaugust Padilla was one of 100 senators who voted on her nomination. There's no way Noem didn't recognize him. It's all bullshit excuses, and the Republicans in power and on the ground are GLEEFUL about manhandling their opposition politicians. We can't shame them, this is what they were brought in to do and this is how they reward their base.Trust me, Democratic politicians getting worked-up and saying how awful this is gives MAGA erections and soaks their panties.

@hn50 This is something I've been trying to tell business/investor people I know. The jobs aren't being replaced by AI, the leadership isn't hiring because all of their magazines and 'expert guidance' from consultants is telling them to spend $500K on AI instead of hiring people.Everyone I know who is working is being SWAMPED with AI, whether it's digesting more walls of words in emails or documents, or talking directors out of misconceptions being put in their heads by their LLM 'assistants', or dealing with code that doesn't work in the real world being thrown at them by people who think AI can do things inside the enterprise without deep context.Purchasing managers are buying 'AI-enabled' CPUs (and skipping much-needed RAM) thinking that they're needed to unlock productivity, when all the NPUs do is accelerate Zoom Background processing.

@Nonilex It's a step up from nebulous claims by fishermen, now we have nebulous *secret* claims about national security. What are they worried about? Chinese drone mothership submarines dropping tiny bombs on Boston? I keep hearing about "enemies doing another 9/11 with drones", but I fail to see what they are possibly thinking is a plausible threat at even the 'whole building' scale.
