@futurebird The movie Empire of the Ants, when I saw it with my parents they explained that the government made a deal with the giant ants, in order to stay in power. I didn’t know whether to be more mad at the government or the ants for selling out! Turned out later that my parents were not being strictly honest about the plot of the movie.Anyway that was some ant-y fascist action!

@futurebird I think this goes back to the end of WWII. That was when suddenly a whole lot of people settled down in new families, and there was an expectation that they wouldn’t live in a multi-generational home. The whole model of getting a mortgage and “buying upward” became a norm. And the system, though racist and predatory, was not actually *broken* the way it is today.

@futurebird @adriano When I was around 10 we lived in a neighborhood of West Indians, and the biggest culture shock piece to me was that kids and teens were always welcome to just walk into anyone’s homes. Maybe true for adults too, idk. There was always some kind of food on the counter in any kitchen, meant for any hungry kid that came by to visit.
