My biggest disagreement with life in general, and I now believe this is the fundamental difference between how my brain operates and how the average NT brain does, is how things are prioritized. In my brain, things are prioritized per their material utility. If something has immediate utility, a visible benefit to someone, or if it's solving a pressing problem, they are on top of the importance list. It may sound like a callous way to put it but health related, life saving action is categorized in the "high material utility" bin for my brain. In addition to this prioritization, I also tend to equate difficulty of a task with its perceived importance. "If something is very important, then the stakes must be high also" my brain says. On the flipside, if I know something is trivial to accomplish physically, it's not "important" in my brain. In the life made by NTs for NTs, most "very important" things are trivial to the extreme. Bureaucratic paperwork, deadlines, remembering birthdays, most jobs are just mindless busywork to me, with no perceived importance whatsoever, but somehow they seem potent enough to stop the world in its tracks for the majority of people. This creates enormous stress for me, and is responsible for most of my burnouts in my 40 year life. The dichotomy between my sense of priority and that of the world around me.When I was still in my PhD program, the work I did, the information I and my team uncovered were the priority for me. The integrity of the work was paramount. Increasingly, through the feedback I received from my advisor, I started feeling like something was wrong and the real thing to focus on should have been how I marketed my research and my efforts rather than the work and the results themselves. This led to my burnout and me leaving before I defended my dissertation.I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on this topic. Do you also think your version of what's important is fundamentally different than the world's?#ActuallyAutistic @actuallyautistic

@info_activism @gadgetboy I’m sorry but I have absolutely no idea what “tactical tech” is.I spent quite a bit of time on their website and I still have no idea if they are an advertising company, a consulting firm, non-profit of some kind or a think tank. What is tactical tech? There’s some vague lip service paid to concepts like “medial literacy” and some kind of conference organizing type of deal (I guess) towards that end but other than that, the entire website is devoid of any solid piece of information as to what this establishment does or stands for. It’s entirely full of marketing speech and buzzword nonsense. It’s probably my #ActuallyAutisic brain failing to see the (probably very obvious but I doubt it) point of the organization but geez, what happened to putting whatever you’re selling to front and center?Imagine if Apple’s website went “cool and sleek solutions to your everyday information technology needs” and had a bunch of links to other pages vaguely mentioning things like “processing power” or “connectivity” instead of going “here are a bunch of computers and phones we’ve selling, oh and here’s a bunch of services you can use with them, so please give us money”.

@anomalon I didn't perceive it as a rush to a new hashtag but as creating a new alternative to the old one for those who aren't acclimated to it and for some reason find it confusing.Personally, as I said a couple posts ago, I'll use both.

@anomalon I'm not sure I understand how it's gets hidden if we use more hashtags instead of less.Everyone in the conversation (as far as I saw) said they'd be fine with using both as #ActuallyAutistic has a traditional following.@autistic.me

Seriously tho, this is a pet peeve of mine.Lots of software industry people use the term #tech or #technology to refer to pieces of software, specific programming languages, frameworks or libraries for those languages, communication protocols etc.To me, it sounds like this:I'm a line cook and my favorite technologies are Viking 12" pan and Shun 8" Nakiri.Oh, I'm a writer and my go to technology is English. A close second is The Oxford English Dictionary!I don't know. Specific products don't fit the definition of technology for me.In my head, technology is a set of broad categories. The entirety of Programming languages or the concept of network protocols are technologies, specific products under these labels, aren't.Are there any #ActuallyAutistic people who feel like this? Because I'm quite sure this pet peeve is a direct result of the way my brain works.@actuallyautistic

@AutisticAdam In my experience, it's never the correct time to add our point to a group conversation, unless we are somehow in a high hierarchical position through some organizational structure, or it's a group of autistics. In a casual friendship, or with a group of colleagues of equal organizational standing, autistic people (in my experience) will never have that right moment because that moment is given to each member of the group by the collective behavior of everyone else on that group depending on the social hierarchy that is invisible to us but very tangible to NT people. We are never given that moment because we are not seen as an individual who's a part of that group and its inherent social hierarchy. We are human in the technical sense to their brains but one who doesn't operate with the same software so might as well be invisible. If you somehow, through a glitch in the matrix, manage to put a word in without being demanding or asserting, it will still not go over well because your tone of voice, body language, cadence, word choices, the order with which you make eye contact with each member of the group (or failing to do any eye contact whatsoever) will not carry the necessary information for NT people to assess what you're saying within the social structure of the group, thus assign it weight and importance. At least, this is my interpretation of the reasons why this particular disconnect happens between autistic and NT people.@actuallyautistic

I remember a weird polemic I got into at kindergarten. This is late eighties.I was already reading at a... I don't know what level. I never understood what "reading levels" were anyway, I mean, if I can read, I can read, right?Well... Turns out none of the other kids apparently were able to read, at least not openly, and reading was actively discouraged by the staff there. There was a storybook hour where everyone picked a story book with illustrations and PRETENDED to read.I found out when the teacher lady noticed I was actually reading the thing and pulled it away from me, telling me I wasn't supposed to actually read the book with, you know, words printed on it. The justification was "if you read now and get good at it, you'll have a terrible time being bored in first grade when all the other kids are still trying to learn."Lady, I don't think you understand how reading works. I can't UNLEARN how to read once I learned it.This is still within my top five unfathomable school experiences.#ActuallyAutistic @actuallyautistic

@actuallyautistic come to think of it...It's been quite a while since I've been in school. If I don't start again, this will always be in my top five.Didn't think this one through, did I 😅
