The thing that made Mastodon “click” for me was when someone described it like email (many providers, one interoperable protocol).
I think what trips people up, though, is—unlike email—each Mastodon server basically *looks* the same on the surface.
Like, it’s clear when you’re signing into Gmail, Yahoo, or O365 that they’re different virtual “places”. But mastodon.social, mastodon.cloud, and mastodon.online all look *exactly* the same, making the “choice” of server even more befuddling.

@kairyssdal I think that “definitively” is doing a lot of work there.

@james Not sure there’s any invisible safety mechanisms, either… 😬Also, if they can’t make self-driving work on this single lane, one-way, closed track, what are we even doing here?

@downey @Gargron That’s true, but I do think this is likely the only way Mastodon scales to mass adoption. “Non-techie” users aren’t going to thoughtfully pick a server when they’re presented with a screen full of choices; they’re just going to bail on the entire endeavor.I hope other providers come along with similarly opinionated options, though… it would be nice if it was *actually* similar to email, with many well-supported players offering solid experiences.
