Let's see. Kamala Harris announced her pronouns (surprise! it's she, her, hers!) , Chris Cuomo said he used female pronouns too and got shamed and predictably apologised. Different protestors interrupted saying it was not trans enough. At least two trans kids were displayed by their parents. Lots of promises to cover medical treatment. I'll see if I have some links @AthenasWrench

@LadySparklePop -- "I feel like the fact that they lumped them all together at all shows a level of ignorance that is deeply worrying." Exactly! I watched the House hearings on the Equality Act (in the spring maybe?) and Nadler (and others) were confusing sex and gender. They don't even know what the words they are using mean!@Ladyfat

@Ladyfat Going back to your OP, and the rest too, yes, everything you say makes sense. The thing that is dizzying to me in the US is that people who are really smart and informed and "believe in" climate change and vaccines are completely passive and snowed with this issue. I see friends posting something about abortion rights and five minutes later about how men are women if they say they are. "Choosing which stick to be beaten with" is sadly apt, but to me it's like whether it's the stick of silence or the stick of ostracism within my own cohort—not even which cohort hates women in which way, but how to navigate my own social group. My heart breaks at what my friends say. There is just no space to even discuss openly. I have told my therapist what I see and was even carrying fear there, though she was fine. I actually educated her ea lot because she was one of the well-meaning uninformed. I was talking to her using he word "women" for breast cancer patients and joked, not sure I can say that, and she said it's ok, you can say "women with breast cancer" to me. That's how bad it is.I have a grad student who is writing about women's experience, and I am afraid she'll get attacked.I am waiting for a significant moment in my workplace. This is all being done casually and informally, but there will have to be a point where someone questions it. I mean, shouldn't there one a pronoun policy rather than vague ideals about "respect"?

I think for questions about pronouns I might start writing in "professor, Ms., maestra."

I find "free to be who they are" especially weird. That's what, clothing, hairstyle, surgery? How many of us women get to be" who we really are"> @Ladyfat @LadySparklePop

Once again, expecting to be handed an automatic procedure to "look female," for free, something women don't have access to. In other words, wanted to be treated better than women in order to "pass as" women. Funny how these fxlx never seem to realize that being treated as a woman means being on the receiving end of disdain and aggression, not free trips to the spa."My friend is blessed with very feminine features and an already good response to HRT. However, these positive attributes are at times overshadowed by her facial hair. Beard hair, unfortunately, reads as masculine — someone, maybe Bornstein, pointed out that to read as male is easy, it takes multiple female characteristics to be attributed into the category of female (sexism dictates that masculinity is the default). Facial hair is a large (probably the only) factor which contributes to my friend being misgendered. It is a lot more unusual to see a bearded woman than a tall one. Passing isn’t everything, some trans people are okay, not passing, or wanting a more liminal gender presentation, even while identifying as female. But in my experience, even the toughest of us feel cut, at least a little, when this happens, and when it happens often, well, lots of internal lacerations can kill you. I find being misgendered on the scale of the apocalyptic, for me, it annihilates my sense of confidence in my gender presentation and I suffer it poorly. I cannot say this is the case for my friend, she’s tough, but I know it hurts."https://medium.com/@AstraSubDomina/the-hairiness-of-trans-health-care-d9637b8048ad

Agree entirely. It makes me think too of how much women are encouraged to live in self-loathing, and how hard it is to get out of that. Street harassment for not looking the way some drunk dangerous-looking football fan thinks we should (just one example). I wonder how many women have had our self-confidence crushed by expectations regarding our appearance, and how much we thought it was our own problem to deal with. The entitlement of assuming insurance should fix it, and right away, is staggering. And yes, maybe the insurance should go to mental health care. Many, many women (I have been told 40%, but of what population I do not know, maybe Americans) remove body hair in painful, time-consuming, expensive, and maybe even dangerous ways. Are we demanding that insurance cover it or we're "annihilated"?@Robotpuppy

Thanks, @elizabeththeradicalfeminist ! I get sort of paralyzed at 'treated as” a woman.' I mean, what the fxck? How can there even be a serious legal or policy discussion anywhere, much less SCOTUS, that thinks "being treated as a woman" is a tangible thing, AND a thing one can demand? I have spent half my career pointing out that I am treated "as a woman" because of SEX DISCRIMINATION. But they are presenting treating someone "as a woman" as a discernment an employer should make. I know it has to do with dress codes, but that phrase is still absurd, regressive, and harmful. It's enraging. Thanks again for the summary!

I was always allergic to her and figured I should make myself get over that, so I did, and now I am sorry I bothered.😉 I will still vote for whoever goes against Trump though. I remember even before 2016 election day she was getting into it on Twitter with Trump in this really immature way. Kind of like the "one man one woman" comment the other day.https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/warrens-same-sex-marriage-quip-captures-what-some-find-exciting--and-others-distressing--about-her/2019/10/11/f3e15a14-ec34-11e9-85c0-85a098e47b37_story.html@Slickguppies

Agreed, @susannunes. It is impossible here in the US. And I would not even say anyone is "joining with" the right. Since progressive organizations are actually now to the right. With reproductive rights under siege, Planned Parenthood is somehow making videos about "reproductive rights are trans rights," complete with cutesie bare-shoulder shots. I mean, how is "gender-affirming hormone therapy" reproductive care? I mean, if you want sterilization, then do that.https://youtu.be/pKHttVjAL68 @PurpleBarnacle

Exactly, exactly, exactly. 100% this! I've been "misgendered" for this reason, and I have gone home and cried, not demanded free treatment so I could feel better about how people receive me.*I keep thinking about this sort of reinforcement. Repeating myself, and I can;'t really articulate it, but it is truly doing harm by insisting on norms that are not norms, which will end up hurting women. We have enough of this already, we don't need TIMs proclaiming what is womanly.*I also notice that this happens to me rarely, which makes me think we identify men less by these superficial things, or in a more general way—body type, etc. So when TIMs talking about getting rid of facial hair to "pass," I'm just like, meh.I also see GC women focusing a lot on TIMs' body hair, which I worry about too. I know for some it is an obvious not-a-woman signal but it's not as non-female as one might think.@Roo

@HebrideanHecate, not to but in on @susannunes , but here is a little info. Sen Angus King is an I who causes with Dems. Bernie Sanders is I, except when he is running for President when he registered as Dem to get support and then switches back. 🤕 Gary Johnson ran for Pres as Libertarian in 2016 (with R William Weld as running mate). Ralph Nader's third-party presidential runs are cautionary tales for many. (I voted for him twice . . . )@PurpleBarnacle

@HebrideanHecate, not to butt in on @susannunes—curious of your answer—but here is a little info. Sen Angus King is an I who caucuses with Dems. Bernie Sanders is I, except when he is running for President when he registers as Dem to get support and then switches back. 🤕 Gary Johnson ran for Pres as Libertarian in 2016 (with R William Weld as running mate). Ralph Nader's third-party presidential runs are cautionary tales for many. (I voted for him twice . . . long time ago.)Generally, there is not much effect from third-parties in US, and when there is many Dems say it just ruins things (as many said about Sanders in 2016, and Nader again and again). There are a few things I observe here that are especially relevant, and I am happy to be corrected/updated: one is the virulent racism, where those on the right have not gotten over Obama being elected (and many other class resentments that go with this). I am also under the impression that unions and labor in general have moved from relatively L to relatively R, and that there is just less influence of unions (right? no?). In any case, many of Trump's supporters are working-class people who mistakenly believe he is in their corner. And also the religious insanity, which becomes single-issue for many people. So, one can always find a third party candidate, especially locally, but it's very "binary" for the most part. The primary thing and the electoral college are also big factors. My primary is held after Guam's and matters not a whit.I compare notes with my family members in Canada and it is interesting that they have three prominent parties (plus) and do not vote in primaries. Above all though I find that my working-class relatives there are totally on to Trump. Friends in the US say education would solve our problems, but I ask what kind? The Canadians I speak of do not have much formal education but they are sane. More than what you asked . . @PurpleBarnacle
