@bewitchyourmind people on the radical left attack churches a lot as instruments of reaction, and while they're not wtong the position of churches as community centres and places that try to help is really important in a lot of places

@bewitchyourmind @_ that's not entirely wrong, but, attacking the institutions of faith on their own push people *towards* those shitty takes. Secularism comes from the abandonment of the church on their own, but then we dig into a whole rabbithole of Marxism

@bewitchyourmind @_ i mean, don't get me wrong I'm a gay trans woman who's a Marxist. Stan the church I do not. But, it's important to see these institutions for what they wholey are than just evil or amazing

@bewitchyourmind @_ mmm, it's more complex than that. The current church is linked to capital, as are all power structures that feed into the state and the status quo, but 'The Church' and faith are merely expressions of the community. The doctrine of the church was once set by the clergy, who were of course part of the state, and that lineage continues but its not like the state controls faith and community

The more I talk to my ace gf the more I realise how her experience overlaps with how I feel? I'm not full ace but whenever she talks about it I'm like "fuck, that's a big mood"

the incel far right movement exists due to the failings of capitalism. are they still god awful people? yes. but mocking them for being in that position that has caused them to become that ways putting the blame on the individual for the failings of the mode of production and social organisation around them.can you point to people who are not bastards despite a shit world around them? damn right you can. and you can point to any numb4er of people who have overcome adversity, does that making mocking those who fail to do that ok? no, and nor is mocking people who have fallen into a trap that's not their fault

I know people attack them from the right place. fascists are horrifying people, disgusting people. but people aren't just individuals. people are products of all that is around them, they don't have the free will and total self awareness to construct themselves from scratch. for example, abusers aren't just born evil they become that way due to issues, likely abuse, of their own and go on to be made bad out of that. do we simply line them up against a wall? no, because we know they, like all people, can be helped to be made better. as can those fascists, once we take away what has made them filled with hate and educate them

hate is easy, destruction is easy, flat unanalytical statements are easy. what's not easy is a deep look at why something is how it is and a look at how things can be changed. the world and the people in it aren't monoliths, they're complex series of influences, actions, history and all of that is very fluid.I'm not naively saying day 1 in communism all fascists will join hands with their new comrades, that's of course not true. but I am saying that reducing those facts, paired with as much effort as we can put in, will change people. and changing people is worth so much more than a bullet

@policeinchains exactly. and none of that is because they are 'evil' at heart, but because the world around them has failed them and made them into those shitheadds they are

@Torie because there's this die hard need to defend ANYTHING 'the left' has. It's hardly new with the DPRK either, this goes back to the Russian revolution itself. We have so little 'actually existing' places that tbise which do or have existed are hoisted up. Partly to give hope in a world of none, partly as a means to an end, partly people too high on dogma and too busy to read the books they pull from

@garfiald ok Garf, you win, I give up. I **will** listen to the song 'Ironic' and not complain about the lyrics. You didn't need to make a whole thread just to get me to listen to the damn song....
