Went to see Thunderbolts last night, and thought it was pretty great. The first half is very funny, in an unforced and characterful way, and the second half goes dark and deep and kind of sweet.The critics here panned it, so it was only on in a very few places, but one of them was the first outdoor cinema to open for the season.The audience loved it, and as 3/4 of them left before the end of the credits like noobs, they were hardly Marvel fanboys.

Superman is goofy, very comic-booky, earnest, spot on politically, and almost as much fun as it wants to be, which I think is pretty good. Everyone is well-cast and very good, except Nicholas Hoult, who is wonderful.

I generally don’t wish to impose my will on other beings, but if I had a superpower I would want it to be: Your Play Is Too Long! I could make them cut 40 minutes from the first half of last night’s, and the last 20 minutes from the end, and it would be a much better show and everyone would thank me.This is true of many shows, but last night’s is on my mind because I saw it last night.

It’s the kind of night you make lentil soup, so I’m browning onions, adding a good handful of garlic cloves, beluga lentils, my sorta mirepoix cube, some frozen tomato sauce, a couple of bay leaves, olive oil, salt, and water, and waiting for it to turn into comfort.
