What tipped you off to a heart attack? my Dad showed none of the symptoms usually associated with a heart attack, it manifested in back pain which lasted for days. He literally was walking around while having 5 mini-heart attacks without fucking noticing until the big one, in which he still thought it was a seriously bad back pain. When we called the Emergency Services, we rang the non-urgent line because we thought it was a back pain problem, this is a man in his late 50s crying in pain, then they informed us of the actual problem. I had to stand outside for nearly 2 hours, waiting to flag down an ambulance, all while my dad was howling in pain, to the extent it was audible through closed windows and 70 feet away. This was during the tail-end of Covid, too, so yeah. Fun stuff. He's fine now, he gets tired easily, so you have that to look forward to even more now.

@Jim @IRONMANAustralia @Herman_Hetherington @DutchBoomerMan @CoQ_10 @white_male I actually have a lot of experience in events management, so let's talk - BA YC are not an events management organisation, but even if they were - this is an event in Hong Kong, not in their native USA. Events are a huge logistical undertaking and exponentially more for abroad. In my job we have to move trucks and trucks of tech and we don't do sound and lighting systems that large, not even close. While we do own a lot of our tech, we contract out to another tech specialist firm, often local to the event sites we work at, this is for the get-in/get-out stages, with usually someone on hand to operate the tech. An event like this will likely have been put together by a local OEM (On-site Event Manager) who are usually freelancers, along with a local firm for handling the tech side of things. From a technical and branding stand-point the event does look competently put together, however the U.V bulbs screams to me of a lack of Health and Safety oversight, events like this MUST have a risk assessment in place, especially when branded as a U.S firm's event.My guess is this really is the fault of the tech company - likely as a result of some safe U.V tubes failing or breaking in transit, and someone simply looking up local suppliers of UV tubes and getting the first and cheapest ones to fit within the budget with no knowledge of the risks involved - not unreasonable to do if you're not familiar with the danger associated with UV tubes. Then again, we're talking health and safety in Hong Kong, which is not exactly renown for it's health and safety record. tl;dr - local contractors are retards.

The event is on brand, and regardless of who and what it's associated with? It could be a lot worse. I've not heard more horror stories come from this, but that could be the over shadowing of the UV all things considered. The magnitude of the fuck-up is a difficult one, because it's difficult to know where the blame will land. For reference, we had to cut a major multi-million dollar event short courtesy of vehicle damage caused by ice, and another year due to most of the cast getting covid. The event in this case went off well, so it's a tech issue, rather than event issue. That said, this does hold the potential for serious legal action. it's a minor oversight that will cost a lot to somebody, easily a solid 8. The events world is a perpetual state of metaphorically putting fires out left and right, you get very little warning of things going wrong, and when they do you need to fix them quick. The bad thing here is there was no apparent issue until after the event was over and done with. Other events continued in next post

There are 3 kinds of events - events designed for profit, events to spread awareness/for fun, and corporate events. For-profit events should NOT aim at making money for the first event, often they run at a loss first year. They tried making a profit. Mistake 1.Events ticket beforehand for a reason, our events open ticket sales 10 months before the events run, mainly so we can strike while the iron is hot seasonally. The problem is they relied on doorsales way too much, but with the lack of things there as well, they got very lazy in looking for vendors. They should have had a list of vendors and potential guests at least 6 months prior and back-ups ready to go. Again first year event rookie mistakes. This is apparent is the near total lack of branding for the con, which was apparently spent on expensive hotels. Take it from me - hotels for events are not expensive, and meal allowances are generally pretty frugal. If I'm being charitable, they started way too big, looking at the cavernous empty rooms attest to that. The event could have been successful on couple of conditions - they had 3 well sold (not sold out) events lined up in different locations with smaller venues perhaps. Off-set costs, gain a reputation, then make the 4th the big one. You need to understand, you don't need any qualifications to be an event manager, but you do need to have a good network of suppliers, vendors, and guests. Events really is one big swirling incestuous ball of calling in favours from other people. Many event managers know each other. (One I work with get cheated on, by her EM Husband with another EM, now no-one in the industry will work with them) They lacked networks, good marketing, experience, started way too big, AND made a huge public fuck-up. Acts pulling out is nothing new, and happens all the time. Dashcon was made worse for not having other things there to make up for it, or divert attention. _________________
