Berek's biggest problem at the outset is that he wants to prove himself as a man. Over the course of the story this will be addressed, but in ways he could never have imagined.

*womp womp*Side note: I'll go ahead and add to the "Why won't he finish it?" theories, and propose (with admittedly little substantial evidence to back this up) that perhaps he has no intention to finish the series and has given the green light to his publisher to hire a ghost writer to finish it for him posthumously.

I like to drive to a quiet spot in the town where I work and park my car there for a few hours, usually to read and/or write. Helps me drift away from the world and focus on the task at hand, that usually being my current WIP, but we'll see if I carry this habit for future projects. I haven't done much writing at home for some time now.As for extensive travel or vacations, I don't know, as I don't do much of either. Maybe one day.

Of late, my ritual/method is to sit in my car, often with a coffee or water, my notebook and a mechanical pencil (no. 2 gets the hand too sore). Whatever amount of writing I get done, I'm usually happy with.

Nothing too particular. As long as I have a quiet-ish place to sit down, nothing more urgent to attend to, and a clear-ish idea of what I'm writing next.

In the case of my current WIP, a place, as the initial premise was me just wanting to try a story set in something of a Nordic setting. For short stories, it's usually an event or character.

Seeing his brother honoured as a fallen warrior gives Berek some small comfort in that dark hour. There is also (at least in the current draft) a moment just before the climax of the story where Berek and Tomas talk about missing their respective Yule holidays, due to being so far from home. They take what comfort they can in being among friends in another dark hour.

Depends on what project(s) I have on the go at the time. I'm not usually super busy around the holidays so I usually have free time to commit to writing if I so choose. I can't remember many previous years, but I do recall doing a little 'Christmas special' short story back in high school. Also, last night (the Solstice, coincidentally enough) I was making inroads into the climactic chapter of my WIP.

Past few years in my house it's been tradition to watch the Christmas episodes of Mrs. Brown's Boys on Xmas Eve, and to listen to the Christmas tunes of Gene Autrey. On my own time I usually listen to a bit of select Christmas music, including Sabaton's "Christmas Truce", Blind Guardian's cover of "Merry Xmas Everybody" by Slade, and some of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas songs.

As mentioned in a previous post, the winter holiday of my WIP's setting is the Yule (a name change is possible but far from certain), a 'festival of light'-type celebration at the onset of the Long Night, with all your typical winter holiday staples of warm fires, lavish food, and large gatherings of kin. Berek and Tomas realize at the onset of the story's climax that they're missing their respective holidays, due to their quest taking them so far from home. They regret this, but take some small comfort in being among friends.

Hopefully making further progress into my WIP (currently have the climactic scene and the falling action/ending left to figure out). I won't say I hope a proper first or second draft is finished, because who knows.As to contributing to the community, the very least I can do is read and review more indie books. Critiques will also be welcome once I have something substantial enough to critique (even if I usually get more than I can give on that front).

Chiefly Berek and his companions, Gorm, Ulvi, Tomas, Valen, and Skaalnir. There's also the Dark Rider, Auriella, and a handful of other minor characters. Hopefully most of them will become well rounded (or as much as I can make them) in time.

I can't remember exactly when I started, but the only writing project I've really focused on this year is my hand-written rough draft of Tale of a Northern Son. As this time, it's nearly done, just currently working out the details of the climactic scene. After it's done I may take a break from it for a while, then I'll begin typing it out and put what's there under heavy scrutiny.

Magic. As alluded to on a podcast I did a while back with @marquesedliddle, I dislike the idea of magic 'systems', and for the most part think magic should be rooted in mystery and metaphor. Thus my WIP features only a handful of people who use rather limited forms of magic, and I don't intend to explain it in detail as I did in my first book.
