@ErikUden Yeah but he has a middle-eastern name. That’s enough for the chief xenophobe.

The sheer ignorance and dishonesty of Peter Dutton is explained by Judith Brett in today's Saturday Paper: "Dutton pointed to the federal Education Department as a good example of waste, claiming it employed “thousands and thousands of people in Canberra” when it did not run schools or hire teachers. It does not employ thousands and thousands, not even 2000, people – just 1639."The big take-out for me from Dutton’s choice to live in Sydney is that he has so little interest in policy that he doesn’t recognise that working on policy is what a great many Canberra public servants do. They crunch data and advise governments on the social and economic implications of competing policy options. They oversee policy implementation and review policy outcomes. Dutton’s attack on Canberra public servants is an attack on the policy heart of Australian government."Dutton portrays public servants as wasteful paper-shufflers who use red tape to stop real people getting things done. It all probably makes sense on Sky News. #Auspol #AustralianPolitics

His schtick about sacking over half the 'Canberra bubble' is the height of shallow populism (to mix some metaphors), appealing only to ignorant people. Trump may have gotten away with this for now, but Dutton is no Trump and this ain't the Untied States!

The leaders in their debate last night accused each other of lying, EG Anthony Albanese accusing the Libs of 'ripping out $80 bn from health and education'. It's true they intended exactly that in the 2014 budget but were curtailed in the Senate with the Greens playing a prominent part. So it's a fudge by Albo. But if we are talking about lying, have we already forgotten Tony Abbott's barefaced lies about this in 2013? #Auspol, #leadersdebate, #ElectionLies

This was after the 'ghastly' Abbott excused other lies by saying you could believe him only when it was in writing and signed by him. Even that was a lie.

So Susssan Ley is elected new Liberal leader by four votes with Ted 'Talk' O'Brien as deputy. He is fanatical about nuclear energy (just not in his back yard) so it will be interesting whether they continue with this vote-losing boondoggle. As that depends on keeping old, ricketty coal generators going for at least another decade, and they could launch it only when they return to power, its time is running out. Jacinta Jumpishippa Price bowed out once Angus 'Well done' Taylor lost the leadership vote.

LOL a Liberal Senator has rejected any move towards the ‘sensible centre’ (where Australian elections are won). She says it’s not a matter of left or right, it’s about ‘moving forward as a team’. If you draw a line between left and right, which way is ‘forward’? Asking for a friend. #auspol

Settle down folks. We all know climate change is driven by young people buying knick-knacks on Temu. Meanwhile we know Woodside’s CEO buys nothing and rides a pushbike everywhere. “Meg O'Neill, the CEO of Woodside Energy, earned a total of $7.45 million in 2024. This figure includes her fixed remuneration, benefits, and various allowances, and places her among the highest-paid CEOs in Australia. “ https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/may/27/woodside-boss-meg-oneill-young-people-fossil-fuels-temu-comments#climatechange

As Victoria and then the feds move to ban machetes, I’m face-planting at the stupidity. Now the thugs will bring tomahawks and axes. Let’s ban them too?

Dorinda Cox has defected from Greens to Labor. The WA senator says she is more aligned with Labor values. I guess that means she loves gas and coal with runaway climate change, rising home prices, AUKUS nuclear subs and unaffordable dental care for many. #auspol
