“Just then Clarence Marshall, Joel Murphy, and Richie Corrierro came wandering across the school grounds toward The Fabulous Five.“‘Hi, team!’ said Richie. The three boys were grinning from ear to ear. The Fabulous Five eyed them suspiciously…“‘We decided we want to join The Fabulous Five club,’ said Joel. ‘What are we going to talk about?’“‘Yeah,’ Clarence said. ‘Are there any initiation ceremonies?’“‘Initiation ceremonies?’ asked Jana incredulously. ‘What do you mean?’“Richie Corrierro chuckled. ‘Well, since you five don’t think it’s right for boys to have clubs that exclude girls, we’re sure you wouldn’t exclude boys from The Fabulous Five. When’s our next meeting?’“The girls looked at each other in amazement.” (83-84)Finished reading The Boys-Only Club, the July 1990 nineteenth book in the Fabulous Five series, by Betsy Haynes. This was an outstanding entry in the long-running, publishing monthly “For Girls” series, and even as feminism, women’s and men’s movements have changed in the decades since, feels particularly relevant and welcome. The Boys-Only Club is one of Haynes’s most ambitious in this serial, and shows her roots. Before she became famous as a popular writer, Haynes authored historical fiction such as Cowslip: A Slave and Spies on the Devil’s Belt. Here, lead Katie Shannon, the redheaded feminist of the Fabulous Five, awash in her sorrows as how sexist Wakeman “Wacko” Junior High is, unearths a time capsule in her back yard! It was buried by Gwyneth Plum, who at thirteen was facing similar challenges struggling in the first wave of the women’s movement in 1918.So, how bad is it for women at Wacko Junior High? After a teacher has Brian Olsen carry a hefty early computer for her (1), the feisty ginger is convinced that at her middle school (in Bridgeport, Connecticut), women are second-class citizens. Her anger grows worse when she asks her boyfriend Tony Calcaterra for a movie date on Friday, but he says no, he’s playing computer games with the guys, and she can’t come—it’s a boys-only club (6).Katie is not happy. For the reader, though, a moment of reflection shows the humor of the situation: Katie is already in a girls-only club, which gives the series its name! But this doesn’t occur to any of the characters until the class clowns walk up and declared they’ve joined, several days later, and it is Tony who finally gets them to knock it off. But the strong-willed, usually opinionated boyfriend—a perfect match for Katie—is silent throughout most of the book; I think partly he’s anxious about saying the wrong thing and getting Katie madder, and partly, he thinks she needs to work her issues out herself. It’s while Katie is sore at the boys jilting the girls on a Friday night that, looking to plant flowers Mr. Dracovitch gave her mother (the adults became an item the last time Katie took center stage, in the twelfth book, Katie’s Dating Tips), that she finds the time capsule! Reading Gwyneth’s journal, she learns some things never change, down to the kids poking fun at their middle school’s name.“I am thirteen years old and in the seventh grade at Misener Junior High. Everyone calls it Miserable Junior High, but we don’t let the teachers hear us say it. Isn’t that funny?” (15)Ha, ha! Those are mostly not the best years. Anyway, Gwyneth formed a club named GRIT—Girls’ Rights are Important Too—and campaigned for her classmates’ freedom to take manual shop, or what we would call wood shop. She also wants to be a doctor, but faces some pushback from her beau, Tommy Rawls. And, she resents having to wear woolen long underwear to keep warm under her dress, then sit next to the coal stove in school. At least Katie doesn’t have to do that! What is wearing a dress like? Other than Ranma Saotome, straight guys will never know, but you can’t help but be curious when girls talk up how much of a pain something so pretty to look at is. Sometimes it almost feels like a dual timeline story: you want to know how things turn out for Gwyneth, as well as for Katie.Reading Gwyneth’s journal moves Katie to start a girls-only club, to meet—not on Fridays, but on Saturday nights, conveniently eliminating all time for couples to date on the weekends. She also starts a petition to add a women’s history class to the curriculum. She and her Fabulous Five friends Jana Morgan, Beth Barry, Melanie Edwards, and Christie Winchell even team up with their rivals, the Fantastic Foursome, led by Laura McCall, to aid in collecting signatures and help organize the event on Saturday. Will the collaboration work out? Alas, on Saturday night, the Fantastic Foursome are no-shows… they are back at Mama Mia’s Pizzeria, flirting with the attendees’ boyfriends! It’s nicely portrayed. This being a series for girls, most of the Fabulous Five have dreamy boyfriends, and in a monogamous world, any strife or distance between them and their girlfriends provides an opening for rival girls to supplant them. So the most attractive girls tend to be least attracted to feminism, and have the most to lose from alienating men, while it is low cost to uggos. In another scene, after some boys had angered the girls by poking fun at Katie’s initiatives, the next day the cafeteria has all the girls sitting at the opposite end from the boys. “Except for Kaci Davis, a ninth-grader, who thought she was queen of the school, and Taffy Sinclair, who had gone to Mark Twain with The Fabulous Five” and is a famously pretty prima donna (71). Taffy refused to shun the boys in Taffy Sinclair and the Romance Machine Disaster, the fourth and best book in the prior series. So, has the 4B movement come to stay at Wacko? The perennial expectation that a woman’s place is in the home and having babies comes up three times, and one can’t help but think that this feud of the sexes is threatening the chance that there will even be any posterity. Things can’t stay this way forever.Katie is at a disadvantage in seeing a man’s perspective on all this, as her father died when she was three, and she’s being raised by her single mother, Willie. But she thinks to ask her mom about her dad.“Katie leaned her head on her mother’s shoulder. ‘What kind of a man was he, though? I mean, did he want you to stay home and have babies? Did he play cards with other men?’“Willie looked at her for a moment. ‘No, to both your questions. He did like to do some things by himself, though. It used to bother me a little when we were first married, because I wanted to be around him all the time. He liked to go fishing at four or five o’clock in the morning, and sometimes he wouldn’t get back until the afternoon. I’d be pacing the floor like the Wicked Witch of the West when he got home.’ Willie made an ugly face and pretended she had claws. ‘Then I’d hear the car door slam and your father would come walking to the door with this little half-smile on his face, like he had a special secret. That bothered me, too, until I realized that he needed those fishing trips.”Neat that Willie is self-conscious enough to find her self-controlling instincts witchy. She continues with some really sage perspective.“Finally, I was able to talk to him about it, and he said he loved me very much, but we were still two separate people. He had fallen in love with me because I was a separate person, and he wanted me to stay that way. That way when we were together, the two of us added up to more than one, and we were better because of it.” (80)His taking me-time for a manly pastime helped enrich his marriage, and so, as Katie begins to realize, maybe the boys having their own club wasn’t so sinister.Haynes is certainly honest about some differences in how the sexes socialize. The boys are much better at “doing their own thing” without thinking about girls at all. After their first club night, the way they argue about who beat who at M1 Tank Platoon, or Dungeons and Dragons (64-65), it’s like they forgot girls existed, whereas much of the girls’ conversation reminded me of the 1939 film The Women: as the movie’s poster says, It’s all about men! Katie originally wanted to lecture Wacko’s girls on women’s rights, but they deci

de on an areobics workout video, bringing each other’s clothes to try on, and learning make-up tips. So, all about looking good for the boys. Also, in spite of the incident that opened this novel, they’re quite glad to have a man help them with the heavy lifting.“‘Where do you want us to put the TV and VCR?’ asked Daphne. She was holding the VCR and her father was standing behind her with a large TV. Beads of sweat covered his forehead as he struggled to hold the heavy set.” (93)Another opportunity for healing the male-female divide comes when we learn more of Gwyneth’s story. It’s important to remember, this book came out in 1990, and as Katie realizes, Gwyneth could still be alive. Willie, a freelance journalist, helps to track her down…The Andrew Bacha cover art is from “When the girls got on line for sodas at Taco Plenty, Katie spotted Shane, Keith, Randy, and Tony sitting at a large table with some other kids from Wacko.” This isn’t the boys-only club in action, but yikes! Katie’s fearsome scowl. I think her boyfriend Tony is the dark-haired one, and he’s supposed to be “deep in conversation with Scott Daly, Jon Smith, and Matt Zeboski, who had Mona Vaughn hanging on his arm,” (64).Up next in the main series is The Witches of Wakeman, which saw print in October 1990. Up first in reading order, however, is The Fabulous Five Super Edition No. 1, The Fabulous Five in Trouble, released in August 1990 and teased at the end of The Boys-Only Club. Make sure you’re following this pleasant old series in the sequence it was meant to be read! #BetsyHaynes #TheBoysOnlyClub #FabulousFive #AndrewBacha #mensclubs #menonly #feminism #womensrights #womenshistory #timecapsule #childrensliterature #childrensbooks #literature #books
