"Rich countries have lost enthusiasm for combating the climate crisis while China is surging ahead in producing and using clean energy equipment, the president of the UN climate talks said.“Somehow the reduction in enthusiasm of the global north is showing that the global south is moving,” Corrêa do Lago told reporters in Belém, where #COP30 is taking place. “It is not just this year, it has been moving for years, but it did not have the exposure that it has now.”"https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/nov/10/rich-countries-have-lost-enthusiasm-for-tackling-climate-crisis-says-cop30-chief

"Simon Stiell, the executive secretary of the UNFCCC, addressed the gathering of ministers and high-ranking officials from nearly 200 countries, in a stark portrayal of the price of failure on the climate crisis.“Not one single nation among you can afford this, as climate disasters rip double digits off GDP,” he said.“When climate disasters decimate the lives of millions, when we already have the solutions, this will never, ever be forgiven.” "https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/nov/10/it-will-never-be-forgiven-un-climate-chief-warns-world-to-act-or-face-disaster

"Private adaptation finance undisputedly has a role in providing the upfront finance for major adaptation investments. And while there is scope to increase current adaptation funding, it is not enough.More international public climate finance is required to increase grants and highly concessional finance for particularly vulnerable countries, and to play a smaller but catalytic role in other developing countries."Grants.Concessional finance.NOT profit-making loans.https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/businessreview/2025/11/10/how-much-can-business-contribute-to-financing-climate-resilience/

Are climate talks and climate policy failing? In short: No."In instance after instance, sober realists have been proved wrong, while the wildest hopes of campaigners have been exceeded. The problem is not that we fail to hit the objectives we set for ourselves. It’s that the drumbeat of bad-faith nihilism encourages us to forget the progress we’ve already made, and lower our ambitions for the future."https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2025-11-13/how-the-world-is-quietly-winning-on-climate

"The evidence of nearly three decades of climate diplomacy is that when we set ourselves an objective, more often than not we will hit it. Consider the European Union’s first pledge under the 2015 Paris Agreement to cut emissions in 2030 to 40% below levels in 1990.Plenty scoffed at the time.In fact, greenhouse pollution last year was already 37% below 1990, and on current trends the EU may achieve a 54% cut, almost enough to hit a stricter target passed in 2020."https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2025-11-13/how-the-world-is-quietly-winning-on-climate

But progress on climate action would be MUCH faster without the meddling of the fossil fuel industry.Kick them out."More than 1,600 fossil fuel lobbyists are registered for COP30, according to an analysis by a coalition of environmental and social justice groups. The group’s review of people granted access to COP30 found that fossil fuel lobbyists at the climate talks outnumber the delegations from nearly every country ([except host country Brazil). "Indigenous peoples from across the Amazon have sailed thousands of kilometers to demand active participation in negotiations. Their message: A green transition that leaves Indigenous voices out is not justice. It’s business as usual.Their journey is both a protest and a demand: an end to fossil fuel extraction, respect for uncontacted peoples, direct financing for community-led projects, and a commitment to climate solutions centered around ancestral knowledge."https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/11/indigenous-flotilla-sails-to-cop30-to-demand-respect-and-climate-solutions/

Saudi Arabia "depends on oil dollars but its people already face a climate ‘at the verge of livability’.""In essence, it is a race: Saudi Arabia is trying to sell enough oil to fund its transition from a petrostate before the world stops buying.“Saudi Arabia wants to be a green country,” he says. “It wants to be a player in the climate economy that is currently being forged, but it can only do so with the money that it is currently making from fossil fuel sales.” "https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/nov/15/170000-a-minute-why-saudi-arabia-is-the-biggest-blocker-of-climate-action

@kirk @steinarb @pluralistic Just wondering: why CO2?I mean, nitrogen is super-abundant. Its boiling point is lower, 77K, but it's that at ambient pressure. (You can't offer the plant workers free carbonated drinks on the job though, whereas the CO2 version is a giant Sodastream).
