I see we have an influx of new accounts again, welcome! Here on Mastodon, it's encouraged to add captions (alt-text) to your images. I realize this can be daunting for those who are not writers, and it can feel like a "homework" assignment with no instructions on how to start. Your friendly neighborhood transcriptionist is here to help! I am compiling a small "library" of images with examples of bad, okay, and good image captions in this thread. If you are struggling, you can reply to this thread with an image, and I will try my best to write you a decent example to learn from.#AltText #CaptionTips

My kid is in a club at school, and they meet 4x a week for 4 hours. So all the parents chip in and stock a "snack cabinet" (granola bars, juice boxes, etc.) because teenagers are hungry goblins. I went to fill the cabinet and noticed a padlock on it, apparently someone had been "stealing." I admit, this triggered me. I spoke to the coach and told him that perhaps he should talk to the kids and find out if one of them is food insecure instead of locking up some two dollar box of granola bars. The look on his face, I could tell it kinda clicked, he didn't even think of that, just assumed it was some punk kid breaking rules. People who grow up with wealth don't even realize that it changes the way they think. Luckily, he's a cool guy, and he was horrified that one of 'his kids' might be hungry at home. Sometimes it just takes one comment to open up someone's eyes to their privilege. As I tell my own children: If you see someone stealing food, no you didn't.

When it comes to translations of ancient texts, oldest is not best. Actually, it's terrible. Our language changes rapidly and translations need to reflect modern usage to be fully understandable to the current reader.I'm particularly leery of translations after the 17th century that make use of the words "thee" or "thou." These words were obsolete by that era and were only used in a pompous way to make the translation seem older than it is. Makes me wonder in what other ways the 'translator' is trying to mislead the reader.

I asked my husband to make me some book earrings to wear to a library volunteer event, and the best part was that he didn't even have to ask what my favorite book was! ❤#bookstadon #library #jewelry

Many US pagans want to visit Stonehenge or other international pagan monuments, but I'm willing to bet that each state has at least one sacred site that is equivalent- a place where people gather for spiritual experiences, then and now. Whether natural or man-made, they inspire awe, and have the feeling of a space out-of-time.I want to hear about your local sacred site! No parameters, I just wanna hear about special places around the US. It would be cool to collect one from every state. #Pagan #SacredSite

Here in Michigan, there is a lake fed by a natural spring called ‘Kitchitikipi,’ the Mirror of Heaven. 40 ft deep with perfectly clear waters, you can take a raft out and see straight to the bottom, where the vents of the springs bubble up. There are all kinds of local folk legends surrounding the lake. There's a tale about a young woman who sent her unwanted suitor to drown, and a story about how new parents would bring their baby to the spring to name it. I make a visit every year. It's open all seasons because the waters never freeze, so winter is the best time to go to avoid the tourists.#SacredSite

My little village post office has an iconic Christmas Cactus. It has been there since 1929, making it 95 years old. It is one of the duties of the postmaster to keep it alive. It has been split a couple times, and almost died during the ‘78 blizzard. If you walk around the town you can see several more hanging in windows because they occasionally give out cuttings for locals to propagate. Anyway, it's the talk of the town when it blooms, so I had to go take a pic to share.

I cannot believe there are still witches out there claiming to be from a long line of “hereditary” witches since before Gerald Gardener. Cringe. I really hope none of the kids are falling for this. The witch-cult hypothesis has been robustly studied for nearly a century, and has been thoroughly disproven. This is common knowledge within the Pagan community. There were many growing pains along the way, but now, we've accepted that we are re-creating and re-building paganism inspired by the ancients, not continuing any hidden unbroken traditions. And that's okay. It’s actually really special, being the first in your line, and creating traditions that might last into future generations.#Witchcraft #Wicca

Mastodon is not a marketplace, where you set up your little booth and wait for the crowd to walk by and check out your stuff. This place is a lunchroom, or maybe a campfire; it's up to you to go and sit next to people and strike up a conversation if you want interaction.Sure, you can sell stuff here, I've bought plenty of things myself that I saw advertised here. But it's not a storefront in a mall, it's door-to-door sales; you need to build a little trust first. Because we're not here to browse or shop, we're here to sit by the campfire.

Most of us Tarot readers will tell you not to make huge life decisions based on a tarot reading. Readings are done to help you think through possible issues, or get a different perspective. However, I think its fine to let Tarot dictate some small, everyday happenings. For example, this morning I pulled the Wheel of Fortune in the reversed position. Bad luck. Then, my kid woke up sick and I had to drive through the snow to the doctor (he's fine). Then, my cats were playing and one of them somehow fell behind the TV stand and cut her ear on something? (she's also fine). Then, I opened my carton of eggs because I could finally have breakfast, and they were all broken. So when my husband called and said he would be late, but that we can still go on our planned date tonight, I was like, "You know what? Let's just cancel, I got the bad luck Tarot card this morning." Thankfully, he understands my witchy ways, and we're gonna cuddle on the couch instead. #Tarot #Witch

A straight white guy friend was complaining about not being able to find any gaming groups for WoW that weren't full of MAGA assholes. He said he keeps joining guilds with older (60+) casual gamers like himself because he can't keep up with the kids, and he'll start to make friends, but then they will reveal themselves to be Trump-lovers. He asked, "What am I doing wrong?"I said, "First of all, your screen name is Russian. Leftys are gonna be wary of that, and the Alt-right loves it. Second, you should put some social signals in your bio, like pronouns.""Okay, but how do I tell people I'm cool, but I'm not gay or trans?"I explained to him what "cis" and "ally" mean. He had never heard of this before, which showed me what kind of online spaces he was landing in.Next, I said, "Look for the furries.""But, I'm not a furry?""Yes, but the presence of furries are like lichen. They are a sign of a healthy ecosystem."This was about 3 months ago. Now, he tells me he joined a guild labeled as LGBTQ-friendly and has made several new cool friends. He says, "I thought they would be talking about sex all the time but it's just a regular group." He mentioned that there are many women and PoC in the group too, and "Everyone's so nice on dungeon runs, telling people they did a good job and being supportive, sharing loot." I didn't tell him that this is what the whole world would be like without patriarchal toxic masculinity, because I think he figured it out himself.

Posts about medicinal herbs hardly ever include the side effects or any negative reactions. It's always, "drink chamomile tea to relax and sleep" and not, "15-20% of people are allergic to ragweeds, which includes chamomile, so it might give you a scratchy throat."-Drinking mint tea regularly can cause acid reflux and exacerbate other GI issues.-St. John's Wort calms you, and is good for depression, but it can also dangerously lower your heart rate if you take beta blockers.-Sure, fennel is great for "digestive issues," but don't schedule a date that night, you will be very gassy.-All members of the Poplar family, which includes Willow, contain the same chemical as modern aspirin within their bark. Don't give it to your kid if they have the flu or chicken pox, it can cause a deadly reaction.-Rosehip helps with painful menstruation, and is a great source of vitamin C. So great, in fact, that you can overdose and give yourself kidney stones if you take too much.-Dear white people, taking turmeric every day will literally turn you orange.#Herbology #HedgeWitch

Wards are renewed! This full moon energy made it feel much easier this time around, though it's still exhausting walking the perimeter of my land, which takes about 45 minutes. The protective stones, along with a tiny prick of the finger, go at the cardinal points, and the birch pentagrams hang at the cross quarters with a sprinkle of graveyard dirt.“I ward this land against the dangerous Earth.I ward this land against all ill intent.May wood and stone and dirt serve as a shield.May none here pass without proper consent.I set this ward with blood, and bark, and gem.I set this ward and charge it with defense. If those unwelcome pass the borders here,Then knowledge of their presence I will sense.”#Witchcraft

I think a lot of modern pagans have this belief that all of the ancient pagans were forceably converted to Christianity. But when you really think about it, that doesn't make sense. It happened slowly over hundreds of years, some pagans probably converted of their own free will. After all, that Jesus guy sounds pretty cool. Helping the sick, feeding the poor, seems like something I would look into. A significant portion of early Christian converts were women. I remember reading Ronald Hutton's take on this and he said, basically it was because it taught men to treat their wives more kindly, stay faithful, and keep their hands to themselves before marriage. Makes sense. Many other cultures of the time, including pagans, were just as patriarchal as Christianity. With the Christians, while they were still only property, at least they were *precious* property. Also, a lot of pagan traditions were wierd cults. Like, Pythagoras (yes, the math guy) wouldn't let his people eat fava beans because he thought they were human souls. And if you eat them, then you fart out the souls.Anyway, it just seems obvious that at least some pagans converted to Christianity of their own accord. It might be better for us to acknowledge that and examine why, so we can learn from it, instead of thinking paganism was so awesome that no one would leave willingly.#Pagan
