@cstross Read a story many, many years ago that pointed out Barbie was the first doll not designed to reinforce Wife/Mom roles for little girls. She was the first doll that was an adult, with her own car, house, and career. Lots of careers, in fact. And she was single. Always. Had a boyfriend, but never married.Seems odd to say so, but Barbie was a subversive feminist icon in a lot of ways.If this movie goes with that theme, it will be quite interesting.

@kairyssdal Goold old Bic #7. (Since the Parker/Papermate stick pens appear to no longer be on offer.)Gel pens clog. Needle-point pens rip the paper. Give me an old fashioned ball point!

@Teri_Kanefield Very much doubt Trump will surrender. He's a terrible sore loser. Maybe his tame Secret Service agents will take him on the lam, a la OJ and the White Bronco.

@stux My whole life, I thought space endeavors should be publicly funded so that "The Public" owned them, and profit motives wouldn't decide design specs.I grudgingly allowed that - in absence of enough public funding - private industry was preferable to no space programs at all. Now, with space endeavors become just another status toy for billionaires, I'm only surprised by how petty, vainglorious, and stupid it turned out to be.

Sadness: Mastodon.nz is looking for a new owner/host, because the current ones are burnt out, basically.I signed up on .nz in 2022, when Musk bought Twitter. Deciding which "instance" to join was a big deal back then, as so many people were leaving Twitter all at once.I chose .nz because I figured it wouldn't be crowded (it wasn't), and because I had been to New Zealand and liked the place a lot. I've also been making a monthly contribution. I'm not in any position to take on ownership/hosting, but I do hope someone can and does. It's a fine instance, lots of great folks, and I'd like to see it continue. If you're interested, you can email Mastodon.nz at info@mastodon.nz or DM them at @theadmin.

@Nonilex A "well, d'uh!" moment. To go with all the others.I will grant them some leeway, seeing as how the sale happened in 2000, and the cancerous, parasitic nature of congloms was not as all-devouring as it is now.But I would say that, since 2010 at the very latest, anyone selling to a major conglomerate or to private equity has to know exactly what's going to happen.
