@interfluidity If world domination post-1980 was to be the goal, an alliance with China should have been a no-brainer. Their industrial prowess and export expertise, our global-policing, trade route-securing navy. Concessions freely granted as often as necessary to keep them onside. And later on, when Putin struggled to the top of the Russian dungheap, it wouldn’t have mattered much whether he looked east or west. He’d have been screwed either way. (I’m Canevecchio, and I didn’t endorse this….)

@interfluidity I agree that 1980 was a little early for all but the truly far-sighted, but then there WAS the precedent of the Nixon/Kissinger danse macabre. Nixon may have just been interested in finding a way to weasel out of LBJ’s quagmire in Vietnam, but I suspect Kissinger had more grandiose aims. Too bad his American enablers were so effing stupid. A Greek amanuensis stuck serving a bunch of pig-ignorant Roman gluttons…. Glad I was a flower child at the time. Saved me a lot of grief.

@interfluidity Why must we read something which has deliberately been made incomprehensible? In late capitalism, not getting screwed is never a matter of avoiding things, it is rather a matter of making sure that things avoid you. This, as it turns out, is a skill that requires some subtlety, a subtlety which is not enhanced by reading the terms of service for anything you can’t do without.

@interfluidity @jbouie We should be humble enough in our rage to admit to ourselves that the author of that cherished phrase was a slaveholder. The America we invoke has, in fact, always been a aspirational enterprise. I’m not saying that we should give up on those aspirations, but I am saying that self-righteousness is a disease we can ill afford to tolerate in ourselves if we expect to ever live up to our aspirations.

@interfluidity As ever, the Nazis already had a euphemism for it—“Konzentrationslager”, KZ (Kah Zett) for short. Meaning, roughly, a place where we can gather ‘em all together and keep an eye on ‘em, not a place where we can lock ‘em in what looks to the incautious observer like shower trailers, then pour rat poison on them through the fake showerheads, until the screaming and gagging stops.

@interfluidity An accident of history, apparently, is all that defanged it and left it unsvailable Trump’s future use. Yet English is a rich language. I’m sure Stephen Miller and Elon Musk already have some alternatives ready to go. .

@interfluidity It’s like timing stock market peaks. What may seem like a rounding error in the afterglow of previous benevolencies might very well lead to a rude awakening in some billionaire asshole’s cattle car. Mind how you go.

@interfluidity How’s that apocryphal quote from Admiral Yamamoto go—something about waking a sleeping giant and filling him with a terrible resolve? Sounds more like something a Hollywood scriptwriter would come up with than a Japanese admiral on the verge of committing his country’s armed forces to an existential conflict, but be that as it may, it does seem an appropriate response to the boasting of MAGA chancers who are so obviously a couple of cans short of a six-pack.

@johnstonphilip @interfluidity Why tell them about anything? Let ‘em wait for the FAFO to kick in like all the other red-hat morons. I know they’re family, but when they vote for someone who’d gladly put you in a camp or gas you, maybe you’d be better off without ‘em.

@interfluidity @johnstonphilip Yeah, but I’m old—I went through this with my own family during the Vietnam catastrophe. I’ve been better off without them ever since. The bitter part comes in knowing that although we managed to change public opinion after 1968, our military didn’t actually leave South Vietnam till 1975. 58,281 dead, 153,372 wounded, 1,584 missing in action on the US side alone, and after what Nixon and Kissinger did to them, we still expect the Vietnamese to make iPhones for us.

@light @johnstonphilip @interfluidity In 1933, there was no proof that Hitler would gas anyone either. To be fair, Trump seems more opportunist than ideologue, but when he calls people vermin and poisoners of the national blood, do you doubt he’d at least consider gassing them? If Musk gets the Zyklon B or cattle car contract, then you’ll know for sure. By that time though, you should already have been in Switzerland if you’d really expected to survive.

@interfluidity Something in the family history, I’m guessing. Like Michael Corleone, he may have found escape from the sins of his family to be too complicated to manage, though to be honest, he seems more like Fredo than Michele to me.

@interfluidity From your latest draft: “It rips opens the demon seal of national grievance, from which wars and end times may emerge.” Absolutely brilliant, this. on April Fool’s Day, 2025 you must be feeling like Cassandra. I salute you!

@interfluidity One has to make thses rational arguments, even in such ghastly times, perhaps especially in such ghastly times. I acknowledge that truth, and you state it superbly. Sadly, I believe that at this point such arguments are principally of benefit to the historians and archeologists who’ll come after us. If we’re going to survive MAGA, what we gonna need now are more refusedniks, more saboteurs, and, as someone snarked a while back on Mastodon, “bigger Mangiones,” if only virtual ones.

@fcktheworld587 @mad Guess he didn’t want any more dead kids hung around his neck. If I could just locate the red state factory where they assemble these dumbfucks, I swear I’d call in an airstrike. (Imagine me flying over the North Florida wilderness in an aging Cessna 150, hanging out the window with a WWII era practice grenade, looking for the identifying smoke plumes that mark the target. 😳) And yes, I’m told he’s a Kennedy. Something really weird must have infested the Kennedy gene pool.

@Nonilex @JonChevreau We’re being told by Fox News tthat an Antifa Combined Arms task force is set to land an amphibious armored division on the waterfront at Palm Beach as soon as Monday to neutralize the insurrectionists rumored to be hiding out at Mar-a-Lago. Cardinal Burke will be allowed to provide Extreme Unction to any Opus Dei members among the expected MAGA casualties. “We’re not monsters,” a Task Force spokesperson assured reporters aboard the Antifa flagship….
