@nugger @skylar @Umlaut @ConfederateHobo I love Dan Price but I gotta be able to stand up inside my housenaturalhomes.org/underground-home.htmImo the dream is to have a normal ass dwelling that you can do things like have guests in, and a bug-out cabin/ similar for when shit gets real or maybe you just want a vacation. For poor people this might mean renting a shotgun shack or small apt in town while having decked out van you can live in, for the wealthier it might mean owning some land and building a place hidden away....Wish I owned land

Very tempted to do a prepper-y challenge and not buy anything for the month of JanTo learn what I need to stock up on and how fast supplies goOr, honestly, Jan could be stockpile-palooza and then Feb would be "now live off your stores" month....?I have to put more thought into it.

@LTJG_Pliskin @Platinum @The_Almighty_Kek @blankdeblank @Shadowman311 I don't remember ever thinking Santa was real, I always thought Santa was like.... a turn of phrase basically. My mom would take me to the store and just say "pick something under 20 bucks for Santa to bring you for Christmas." I'd pick it out and watch her buy it, drive home, wrap it in front of me, put it in the her closet until I'd watch her take all that stuff out to put under the tree. I knew "meeting Santa" was a dress-up thing because my own grandfather was Santa for some events. I had a sort of backwards Santa Moment. Around the age of 7, I realized I had friends that actually truly thought Santa was real, and I thought that was the wildest stupidest thing I'd ever heard. My mom told me you weren't supposed to break the secret to the Santa believers because it was a matter of them getting smart enough to figure it out themselves. I was also raised purely atheist, literally didn't know the first thing about Christ, but my mom said "just tell people you're Catholic." I had a few situations where kids could not believe I had never been to church. I'm mostly glad I wasn't raised with religion. I think a lot of people never put any thought into their faith and just coast by. That type of faith -a child's level of understanding- is easily broken if not further developed.

@mangeurdenuage Wonderful. I've been scheming about doing a 1 month "challenge" where I don't buy anything. To gain appreciation of what to stockpile/how much stuff I use and how to cook from reserves.

@mangeurdenuage @victorgijsbers I knit, this doesn't look like anything to do with it unless you mean something besides the textile art.My first thought was that it was a chord chart. That's the right amount of lines for a staff i.e. sheet music. It could also be some sort of diagram for a logic gate...? That's just off the cuff I don't have any clue about that area. Picture is an old knitting pattern. Mostly this stuff is transcribed too. Like "k4 p1 k2tog then purl until end of rows 1-16."

@LTJG_Pliskin Criss cross mostly. "Criss cross applesauce" was the cue in gym for everyone to sit like that. Cross leggedI only heard Indian style from my grandparents/very old teachers

I have serious mental issues and I don't know where to turn. No diagnosis seems to fit me. I've been to so many therapists, psychs, social workers, counselors. Decades. It's not a matter of "finding the right one." It's just not the right avenue. I devour any reading materials I can get on anything like my issues. A turning point in my life was a therapist spending several minutes hyping up that she had a bookcase: out of over a hundred books, she had a few on my sole diagnosis. She showed me the books: I owned every one of them and had read them cover to cover. I want answers- I need help. I need new avenues.

I don't even know how to describe what's wrong anymore. I'm not depressed, and I don't have anxiety. And that's all almost anyone knows what to deal with. I've lost almost everything in my life. Thousands of dollars and my house. And I don't know why. In public I'm 100% normal. I'm reasonably successful. People have thought I might have a rare seizure disorder, but I'm always aware of my behaviors, and they stop in public. In private, I just can't make life work. And I have no idea how to fix anything.

@WashedOutGundamPilot @BigDuck They tried to do this event twice in my town. The press showed up, but literally no one showed up to participate. They said it was really awkward.

Where exactly am I supposed to go as a poor young 20-something to socialize with other people my age IRL? I don't drink or party and not interested in starting. I go to work and I'm the youngest person in the building by a decade. I go to church and I'm the youngest person by TWO decades. I go to the mall on the weekend and the only people hanging around are elderly mall walkers. I go to the library to chill and the only other people chilling are old homeless people. Ever since the pandemic, I feel like young people don't hang out in public anymore. After much thought I did try Snapchat. All I saw was Prime Hydration ads and TikTok-addled weirdos and people selling drugs. I deleted it. I don't have a single contact in town within 15 years of myself. I go out on the town almost every day after work and I know a lot of storeowners and so on. I'm "a regular" in a few places and tons of people from my work (old homeless men) say hi to me in the street.

@MemeLandfill I hated university so bad, I dropped out and went to work and moved out and just "grew up." I tried all the social stuff. I was in three clubs and went on two different out-of-state, multiple day social trips through them. I just never ended up with friends.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong or what I can do different. I've tried different churches, but all the churches I'm willing to attend are too conservative for zoomers apparently. Even when I've gone to the gym, maybe it's the time of day or something, but it's all old people. Like 45+. Is it because I work weekends, and go to the gym at like 7AM on a Tuesday? Is the whole "early rising sigmachad" thing a meme? Is everyone my age literally just asleep or nursing their hangovers? Am I supposed to go to a rich person gym? I think I'll literally go days without talking to someone within 5 years of my age. Where are the young people?

@MemeLandfill I've got too many demons to date seriously, although I had a few girlfriends in my teenagehood. In general I think my fucked up past keeps me from making friends. Most people in my situation would find plenty of friends in "the wrong crowd" but instead I just am alone. It's not that I'm socially akward but rather that people universally report I act old for my age and I think I'm offputting to my peers because they're still essentially "kids."Unironically hoping that enlistment will be what I need socially and economically.

Saw a video that was about communities in abject poverty in the US, where no one works and everyone just lives on handouts, going "how /do/ they do it on THAT amount of money?" And the amount of gov gibs was higher than my monthly wages. I get it's harder to raise a child on 1200 a month than it is to be a bachelor, but even when 750 of my income went to rent I still SAVED hundreds every month and generally thought "I make just enough money."

@Tepid_Tapir Castile soap is based. You can use it for pretty much anything from washing yourself to washing dishes, clothes, house, etc. However for any newbies, the liquid stuff is more concentrated than the liquid soap you're used to- it's more akin to dish soap, i.e. you only need like a drop to wash your hands, or a few drops for shampoo and it lathers a ton. Propylene glycol, aluminum salts, parabens and sulfates are the boogeymen of skincare, but I honestly couldn't give you a medical explanation. I think they're all hormone disruptors and/or potential carcinogens. Neutrogena, CeraVe, and Cetaphil are generally the most safe, sensitive-friendly, and accessible brands you'll find commonly. If you want to take care of your biggest organ, avoiding UV skin damage is going to make a LOT larger contribution than changing soaps. A wearing a daily moisturizer sunscreen on your face and neck is literally the best and easiest thing the average person can do to prevent damage, that they don't do. A 15 dollar bottle lasts me 3 months or so. Even if your only sun exposure is driving back and forth to work or walking around ton. And even outside of summer.Hyaluronic acid and ceramides are the good guys in skin products that you can't go wrong with. Also important for skin health: washing your clothes and bedding regularly. And I'm anal about avoiding polyester (plastic clothes), but that's kinda just me.

When I work night shift I always think "oh boy I'm gonna sleep so hard after this. Really snooze." Then I drive home with the morning sun in my eyes and by the time I get home I'm wired. Lay in bed and my brain is just going "but it's morning?"
