@eva_chaos @noelreports Safer than staying with a burning tank that is likely to explode, also safer than staying in the open (someone might be annoyed enough to pick them off with an FPV drone or a mortar), and they might be able to sneak away through the woods - or surrender alive if intercepted.

@futurebird @leyrer The lamps could be pulled out slightly which would disable them, then you could use the "Lamp Test" switch to display the image or message.3:O)>Swapping the Start and Stop buttons was an EVIL trick as most people didn't know the actual positions and would go by the colour/lettering on the button.

@publius @cstross The UK approach (Polaris/Trident warheads) involves a military convoy of quite substantial size, with armed and Police escort plus support vehicles. The USA approach will be very similar, I would expect:https://vimeo.com/698789315?from=outro-embed(From here: https://www.nukewatch.org.uk/ )

@publius @cstross The convoys are from AWE Burghfield (where the warheads are manufactured and serviced) to the Trident submarine base. They will not be complete assemblies, or even enough (probably) to create a functional warhead, but just about every part of them will be classified TOP SECRET/ATOMIC or equivalent. Nuclear weapons have a shelf-life, Tritium decays, radiation degrades the explosives and possibly the electronics. Your bucket of instant sunshine needs to be in tiptop condition.

@publius @cstross They even had problems with _existing_ fully tested designs where a filler material (presumably some kind of plastic) was produced by a different process and stopped working as it should. (Several million dollars of research later this was discovered to be the lack of a crucial contaminant caused by the process change.) Oops!Chemical Engineering changes can pose unexpected problems.

@foone Done! Get well soon, we need more of your lunatic devices to take our minds off the lunatics in charge of the place. 3:O(>

@Unabart @cstross @skatem Guilty as charged m'Lud.This moose has had all the others (and liked them), but couldn't face the thought of a pickled egg. Roll-mop herring is delicious (so the local stupidmarket stopped carrying it), proper dill-pickled gherkins are lovely (but must be crisp and not mushy), and onions are good, too. Add some really sharp cheddar and a bit of piccalilli to the roll and butter for an extra-happy moose. 3:O))>(I'm hungry now and it's not even noon.)

@publius @cstross We have that in parts of England, too: there is a bus into the nearest town so people can go shopping, once per day; The bus that does the return journey leaves the town twenty minutes before the outward bus arrives. But "Hey, they have a bus service, what are they complaining about?". 🤬

@foone I saw one of those demonstrated at IPEX, years ago - the London College of Printing had a stand. (I'd already seen a Linotype at the local newspaper, years before.)Really impressive in operation. (Engineering marvels FTW.)3:O)>

@foone That's just a re-statement of Parkinson's Law.[1] 3:O)>[1] "Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion." [2][2] "Data expands to fill the space available for storage."Though this moose would change "fill" in the second quote to "exceed".
